Wichita AP report: Loren L. Campbell a 36 year old bookkeeper in Wichita was arrested on a bigamy charge for maintaining marriages in Wellington and Augusta. He allegedly wed Phyllis Daniels Campbell in 1948 at Abilene and Sue Scates Campbell in 1963 at Sedan, fathering three daughters and a two year old son. He worked in Wellington and Augusta part time and in Wichita full time, evading suspicion until jailed for arraignment in Butler County.
Violent storms swept the eastern third of the nation with gale winds up to 55 mph and heavy precipitation from New England to central Florida. The Midwest faced blizzard conditions with 11 inch Detroit snow and over a foot in Chicago, while Mt. Washington NH logged gusts to 133 mph. At least 30 deaths reported nationwide from shoveling, exposure, and accidents as freezing temperatures spread, isolating communities and delaying travel.
Soviet Premier Kosygin warned the Vietnam war could spread beyond current borders if the United States does not halt its actions He urged U S troops to withdraw from Viet Nam and from South Korea He spoke after talks in Moscow with North Viet Nam North Korea and China noting friction with Red China and describing talks as useful for future relations The broadcast followed a Moscow Communist meeting likely with China boycotting and hinted at unresolved differences within the Communist movement
Two 16 year old Topeka residents were arrested here this afternoon while driving a car stolen earlier in Topeka. Chief William Troelstrup said they would be turned over to Topeka authorities. The suspects tried to run as the car was stopped. officers fired one shot in the air before they stopped.
Pomona residents approved a 121000 bond to build a city sewer system by a 175 to 27 vote. The project costs total 197000 with 66000 from a school district assessment and 10000 from a city footage tax. Engineers to finish final plans by May 1, with council to confirm.

They noted remodeling of the Lawrence Police Fire Building and discussed how Floria’s ordinance is working in practice.

The Douglas County reappraisal program shifts to a 30 percent assessed value with hearings scheduled in March and May. Protests run March 15–19 and 22–26, with state board reviews if needed. In Honolulu the 18 year old Navy seaman from Harrisburg Edward James Brennan was found not guilty by a U.S. District Court jury after being accused of threatening to assassinate President Johnson. The alleged statement was reportedly made in a military barracks.
Vice President Hubert Humphrey promised to take up the grain shipping rate problem at the White House and with federal agencies after a Kansas luncheon. Dr James A McCain of Kansas State University said the flour milling industry in the 10 state area is in jeopardy due to disparities in railway rates for wheat versus flour. Governor William H Avery and members of Congress attended the briefing where the need to address unequal costs was stressed. Humphrey committed to assist.
North Viet Nam has infiltrated elements of a combat division through Laos toward South Viet Nam. The incursion threatens the 1st Army Corps area along the 17th Parallel. Authorities caution about ongoing movements and potential fighting in the frontier zone.
A 70-foot bridge section gave way on a county road near Douglass Kansas sending a pickup with the Mitchell family and another vehicle into Walnut River. Lloyd Mitchell 38 and Wendell Mitchell 15 died. four others injured including Nita Joan Mitchell 34 and Mary Ann Mitchell 12. A semi tractor trailer weighed 83,720 pounds reportedly crossed moments before the collapse. Local motorists described hearing the cries as responders arrived.
NEWINGTON New Hampshire AP A B47 bomber and a KC135 tanker collided about 700 miles east of Dow Air Force Base Maine during refueling. The bomber from Pease Air Force Base was returning from Spain. the tanker flew from Dow AFB Bangor with the 71st Air Refueling Squadron. Survivors were not confirmed.
The Duke of Windsor aged 70 had eye surgery today at the London Clinic and officials said his condition is satisfactory.

Hal E Cleavinger former Kansas University halfback is elected vice president of the First National Bank of Lawrence. He takes duties March 1 handling loans public relations and trust department training. Cleavinger previously worked as an attorney for Phillips Petroleum and served in the Air Force JAG. He played for KU 1950 to 1952, earned a KU law degree in 1955, and plans civic involvement after relocating wife Suzanne and three children to Lawrence.
Former National League third baseman Grady Hatton begins a role as a scout for the Houston Astros. Hatton, known for his time with the Reds and Cubs, will evaluate minor league prospects and provide player recommendations for the Astros organization.
