Ozark Sheriff Shot Dead in Barber Shop Incident
In Ozark Arkansas on Teb 26 Sheriff Champ Crawford was slain during a barber shop visit after an argument with Jim Wilson, a former rival in 1940. Wilson was mortally wounded and died later at a Fort Smith hospital. The sheriff, famed for tracking Jack Russell, killer of Billy Hamilton, died almost instantly. Russell, alias Oliver Dressler, had escaped from a state prison in 1939 and hid in a Cass Arkansas cabin. Crawford baited Russell by posing as a fisherman and shot him as he appeared on the porch, ending the manhunt.
