City extends building ban on Wal-Mart site
Lawrence city commissioners extended a three month ban on issuing building permits at the northwest corner of Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive while lawsuits over a proposed 120,000 square foot Wal-Mart and 6Wak Land Investments project proceed. The vote kept the corner rezoning question unresolved as officials seek to block large commercial development on commercial land.

City Hall seeks federal aid to fix high crash intersections
City officials ask for federal help to study four Lawrence intersections with high crash counts in 2003. Sixth Street repaving set for summer
A 1.6 mile stretch of Sixth Street from Arizona to Arkansas will be repaved this summer with a new surface and lane markings. The project, funded up to 200000 by the city, supports KDToP efforts to maintain streets connecting to major highways. Sixth Street is U S Highway 40 linking with Kansas Highway 10 and McDonald Drive, the access road to the Kansas Turnpike. The city will cover any costs beyond the grant, City Manager Mike Wildgen said.
