Express mail service to begin in Lawrence Monday

Lawrence residents will have guaranteed 24 hour mail service to 600 cities coast to coast starting Monday. The express program was approved after a year of planning by city officials and the Chamber of Commerce.

Lawrence High set to fund Washington trip with fundraiser sale

Lawrence High aims to raise 22500 for an April Kennedy Center trip by a March 5 and 6 rummage and bake sale at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Donations totaling 16500 are needed after student contributions cover 6000. The event includes fruit sales, flag sales, a telethon March 20, and performances by music groups.

Lawrence Boys' Club to honor local youths at banquet

More than 250 people are expected for the 1976 awards banquet at 6 30 p m Thursday in the Kansas Union. Whitey Herzog Kansas City Royals manager will be the featured speaker. Fifty eight boys will receive club jackets eight youngsters receive special service awards and a Boy of the Year will be announced. It is the second year for the event following last year’s speakers Bud Moore and Paul Wiggin.

Senate panel rejects Ford Social Security tax plan

The Senate Finance Committee rejected President Ford's plan to raise Social Security taxes by up to one dollar per worker weekly. The committee will not include a payroll tax increase in 1977, while it may boost SSI benefits by up to 900 million dollars next year. The move suggests a growing deficit outlook, with solvency projected through 1981 despite widening gaps between tax receipts and benefit payments.

Boycott Ends On Boat Operator Licensing Bill

A Topeka House transportation committee killed a bill requiring certificates for motorboat operators over 24 horsepower. Representative Lloyd Buzzi of Lawrence said the measure was not ready to advance. The proposal would have mandated a certificate issued by the secretary of transportation.
