Students Meet to Discuss Seizure of Newspapers

University leaders and Black Students Union members met to discuss Monday’s destruction of 11 000 Kansan papers, with about 6 000 lost, and possible punishment if repeated. Chancellor Chalmers faced petitions and delayed attorney general guidance as BSU members pressed for action.

Miss Whitley Cited Scholar At KU Today

Lawrence High senior Jill Whitley named among 33 Summerfield and Watkins-Berger Scholars for 1970 by KU official Jerry Rogers. Scholars are high school students granted need-based aid or honors, with Whitley highlighted for a 3.9 GPA and activities in AFS, Spanish Club, Pep Club, and CYO.

Break-Ins Reported At Lone Star Lake Cabins

Two break-ins at Lone Star Lake cabins were reported by the Sheriff’s Department. Tom Burns of 321 Lyon reported his cabin entered since Feb 14 with items including a television electric roaster seven fishing rods and three reels taken. A Saturday break-in at Jim Brooks cabin prompted a deputy to check for losses while Manford Sherman of Topeka reported a door open at Brooks cabin.

Blooming Confetti and City Oil Bids at Lawrence Meeting

A yellow crocus greeted the Lawrence newsroom as spring arrives. The Chamber of Commerce Women’s Division contest seeks slogans and symbols against littering with about 10 entries so far. The City Commission planned to use a coin toss to break a tie between Standard Oil and M and M Oil for city oil contract. Gulf Oil led gasoline and diesel bids. Gregg Tires offered low tire bids. awards to be made at today's meeting.

Reapportionment Measure Defeated in Kansas House

In Topeka the Kansas House defeated a bill creating a legislative reapportionment commission 33 to 75. The proposal would have formed a commission to collect data and draft reapportionment plans for legislative consideration. Three new study proposals were also introduced, including one on teacher salary payments and a state salary schedule.

Faculty Adviser Denounces Kansan Copy Destruction

Icemaker Taken From Ramada Inn In Break In

A 300 pound automatic icemaker valued at 750 dollars was stolen from the Ramada Inn at Sixth and Iowa. The nightwatchman Bill Chaffee reported the theft to Lawrence police after an unlocked door near the west end was used. Earlier a liquor store break in at 1917 W. 24th occurred at 2:30 a.m. with damage to the door and liquor missing.

Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Anne attend charity film night

Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Anne attended a screening of Anne of the Thousand Days at the annual royal charity performance. The queen quipped this is one way of catching up on our history after the Monday night benefit. The film recounts the romance of Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII.
