Reports of coyote activity southeast of Lawrence prompt a one square mile wolf hunt Sunday afternoon March 2. Farmers plan a large county event with 24 bagged coyotes previously noted. Hunt crews meet at 12 20 pm near Henry Thorens farm and proceed along specified field lines with patrols by airplanes if weather allows.
Snow storm that hit the eastern board region eased after a three day blast returning to near normal. Maine residents faced strong winds and drifting snow as the storm moved northeastward. At least 38 deaths were reported and many secondary and rural roads remained clogged with drifts up to 12 feet. Near Corkeville, a work zone opened three lanes, trapping travelers for hours before traffic resumed. La Guardia resumed flights after cancellations since Thursday.
Harry K. Thaw, 76, the multimillionaire heir, died of a coronary thrombosis in his rented Miami Beach home. His death occurred Saturday night and he was to be transported to Pittsburgh today for funeral rites and burial.
Buffalo faced a near total shutdown as 2,500 teachers walked out, leaving 20 schools open with chaos in halls and about 64,000 pupils affected. Nonstriking staff attempted to run 19 remaining schools. Lafayette High saw crowds and a few classes. British authorities deny knowledge of a refugee ship said to head toward Palestine with 63 uncertified immigrants aboard. Jewish sources identify the vessel as the Ulua flying the Honduras flag, with an American crew and many young Jewish men who allegedly renamed it Ken Hecht. Two persons were slightly injured in two traffic accidents reported to city police Saturday night. Dean Banker, 19, of 945 Emery Road and Ronald Spaulding, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Spaulding, were treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for bruises. One driver, Marion D. Owens, faces a charge of driving while intoxicated after his 1994 Chevrolet struck Spaulding as he started to cross Tennessee Street at Fourteenth Street. Banker suffered minor injuries when his westbound Ford collided with a 1936 Ford driven by Dr. C. B. Johnson at Sixth and Maine streets.
Joy W. Murray resigns as Leavenworth chief of police effective immediately after acquittal on conspiracy charges. Mayor Kirmayer has not chosen a successor. Capt. John Giese serves as acting chief while Murray and his wife plan a brief trip before leaving town.
In Muncie Kansas, a train car collision east of town last night killed seven, including Kenneth Dale Hogan aged two and Mr and Mrs Hecan with four children Sharon 7 La Wanda 3 Artie Joseph 4 and John Raymond 10 months. No witnesses. Union Pacific westbound train crew said the car was not seen until impact. Engineer William Eera estimated speed at six miles per hour.
Topeka Kans February 24 A veteran s bonus bill was among 15 bills introduced in the Kansas House today as legislators pushed bills before the session end. Rep Herb J Barr D Lent proposed paying veterans one dollar per day for service and 125 for overseas service to about 200 000 World War II veterans with cost undetermined. Also proposed were school finance measures and actions to end the one cent gasoline tax by July 1 1948 and various cooperative tax plans. A state rent central program if federal aid fails and a juvenile code bill were among other measures.
Topeka report for February 24 shows continued cold with light snow flurries possible through Thursday. Northwest winds bring subfreezing lows, from five above in the north to near zero elsewhere. highs may reach 28 to 32. Weekend snow varied across the state with amounts ranging from 0 to 1 inch and moisture around 0.4 inch. No warmth expected. February may become the driest on record if precipitation stays low. Record low highs and highs across towns such as Goodland and Dodge City are noted.

Insurance head dies in Milwaukee. The New Western Mutual Life president Michael Cleary, a Wisconsin board of regents member, dies Saturday. A group of 10 educators backed by the American Association of School Administrators says schools must be funded at least three times current levels to train citizens for atomic age challenges. They call for a revamp of school activities and stronger support to ensure education fosters civilization rather than destruction, with findings to be discussed at the AEA convention starting March 1 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
A Kansas district conference for vocational agricultural teachers and on the farm training instructors is planned for Lawrence on Tuesday March 4. L B Pallom state supervisor said the session will focus on organizing and running the on the farm training program for veterans. Noted speakers include F Hall of Kansas State College and E R Ausherman from the Veterans Administration.
Dr Florence J Barrows a 27 year Lawrence physician died suddenly at her home on Vermont street apparently from a heart attack. She was a resident of Lawrence since 1920 after practicing in Hutchinson and Kingman. Survived by a son a stepson a sister and nieces and nephews. Funeral services set for Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Rums ey funeral home with Dr O F B Allison officiating and burial in Memorial Park cemetery.
A Saturday night blaze gutted Fred Laughlin’s Maple Street home in Eu dora, leaving him clothing and furnitureless as neighbors and the Eudora Fire Department fought flames. The frame house, owned by Carl Parkins of Lawrence, stood after the roof collapsed. Origin undetermined. a neighboring house was saved. Dwight Harner, injured in a separate Highway 10 collision near Kansas City, is reported to be released from hospital in a few days.
Rev Bryan Green of Holy Trinity Brompton spoke at Hoch auditorium launching Religious Emphasis Week at the University. He argued that one world needs more than reason and urged personal contact with Christ plus faith and work to resolve spiritual confusion among American students. He warned against treating God as insurance and urged attention to family life seminars and discussions on Christian and rational relations, with a round table on One God One World to follow.
The Raw Valley Beekeepers' Association renamed itself the Eastern Kansas Beekeepers Association on a Friday night to include beekeepers in Franklin Osage Minty and nearby counties. The group formed to coordinate efforts against American Foul Brood and other bee diseases and hopes to attract funders for hive owners. Sperry, the president, urged operators to attend the next meeting in district court on March 21 in Room. Attendees included members from Franklin Osage Jefferson Douglas and Shawnee counties.
