Prices of Commodities Near Peak Yet Never So Low
New Year, Feb 24. R G Dun & Co reports a broad wasting of business with weekly fluctuations inconclusive. Prices for wheat, sugar, and some manufactured goods are very low. cotton, wool, and raw iron no major gains. Money markets glutted, trade volume insufficient, and government bond sales fail to lift rates. Textile demand shows slight improvement in some mills while others resist. Employment remains tight, with modest gains in calfs and iron works. Overall prices now average about 1-Lé per cent higher than a month ago, yet have rarely been this low historically.
