Cleanup bill could reach twelve billion for leaking tanks
A GAO estimate says cleaning up leaks from tens of thousands of underground gasoline storage tanks will cost at least 12 billion dollars. EPA has spent over 10 billion in 20 years. 117,000 tanks remain, with 43 states expecting 16,700 new leaks in five years. The fuel trust fund totals about 2.6 billion and is projected to 3 billion by 2008.
