North Korea reports accuse the U N of barbarous massacres at Koje Island prison camp while a truce talks meeting notes a Monday riot that killed 69 Korean civilians and wounded 142 in Panmunjom. A jet victory earns Maj. William T. Whisner Korea’s latest jet ace with five Mig kills.
An F-84 Thunderjet crashed into a power plant and a hospital near Sadukai, 12 miles northwest of Pusan, killing the pilot and 11 Korean civilians. At least two women and a baby were among the dead. five more people were injured. Property damage was estimated at $100,000 as the blazing jet caused a fire destroying six buildings.
Five Mexican nationals who crossed the border and hid in Camp Pendleton were captured near an airstrip by Marines. They were questioned for over two hours before being handed to immigration authorities.
Premier Soekiman's 10 month old coalition resigns amid pressure over continuing U S aid under the Mutual Security Act. Washington February 23 The Senate Internal Security Subcommittee released testimony alleging that the American Communications Association election was rigged by Communist officials to keep control. Former officers testified to ballot destruction and replacement, with evidence from Wallis Ryan and Jacobsen of irregularities in 1946 1948 and 1949. The report urges rank and file action to protect elections and notes threats against whistleblowers.
The William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas hosts an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. tomorrow in its newly remodeled Fowler Shops home, cost 5300,000. The three day celebration included a dedication with about 150 editors officials and alumni, plus a luncheon and alumni tours led by students.
Five Kansas recipients received Freedom Foundation honors in Philadelphia on Feb. 23. Rev James L Christensen of Wellington earned second place and $200 plus an honor medal for The Life Worth Keeping. Rev Alexander Maxwell Dodds of Manhattan took third with $100 and a medal for Gods Proclamation of Mannings Freedom. Rabbi Joseph Utschen of Topeka earned third with $100 and a medal for Why Has God Blessed America. Dwight Peyton of Overbrook received an honor medal for Story of a Country Town. Richard 4-H Club of Pratt earned a medal for its citizenship program.

Premier Aly Maher Pasha announces an exchange deal with the Soviet Union for 200000 tons of wheat in return for Egyptian cotton.
Washington reports the Atomic Energy Commission notes a revival of frontier prospecting for uranium ore across the nation. The AEC offers a bonus for ore finds even at one tenth of one percent uranium and provides a how to handbook. A revised eight-ore guide with color pictures is now circulated after 77,000 copies were used.
More than 6,000 Lawrence area residents will join in the World Day of Prayer observance. The first part Sunday morning uses the Lit tany, the 1952 Call to Prayer, in local Protestant churches. A 7:30 p.m. service Friday at First Methodist Church completes the observance shared with 91 counties. The event circles the world from sunrise in the Fiji Islands to St. Lawrence in the Arctic. The Law rence effort is led by Mrs. John H. Patton and the local Council of Church Women, with roots tracing to 1887 in home missions prayer efforts. An offering supports six missions projects.
The Weather Bureau predicts a dreary weekend for Kansas with mostly cloudy skies tonight and Sunday, plus light rain or snow likely in eastern areas. Temperatures will vary, with lows from 15 to 23 in the northwest and 32 to 35 in the southeast, and Sunday highs reaching 30s in the northeast to 40s in the southwest. Eastern Kansas records light moisture while western regions remain dry. Wichita reports a 44 degree high, and Goodland notes a 17 degree low last night.
Lt Comdr Wilfred Zelenski executive officer of Attack Squadron 702 based at San Diego Naval Air Station died in a single engine aircraft crash near Osage City Kansas Thursday night. Surviving family include his father Joseph Zelenski of Kenosha Wisconsin and widow Virginia Zelenski of Coronado California. Zelenski's body was taken to Forbes Air Base Topeka. Zelenski and Lt Ralph Carson from San Diego NAS were flying bombers from Albuquerque to Olathe when their flight encountered a storm over Northeast Kansas. Zelenski's plane crashed five miles southwest of Osage City. Carson landed safely at Wichita.
Clyde R. Zimmerman of Coffeyville is elected commanding officer of Battery B 130th Field Artillery 35th Division at the unit’s 33rd annual reunion. John S. Amick of Russellville Ark elected vice commander. Claude Buckner Ottawa re elected secretary. Forty four members attended the reunion with 131 known addresses and 104 unknown. Bramlage urged voting and continued VA hospital facilities for ex servicemen. Memorial service held for the dead. Osceola Trio from Haskell performed at the dinner.
Washington reports Indonesia ready to resume tin shipments to the United States at the U S price with potential higher terms after the current year. The RFC buyer halted Indonesian purchases when prices spiked last March. The U S position ties Indonesian tin to Britain’s contract rate as negotiations loom for a renewal beyond the year.
William T. Farley, president of the Association of American Railroads, told the ICC that railroads may spend 2.18 billion in the next two years for 200000 new freight cars and 3465 locomotives. He testified as part of the request for a 15 percent freight rate increase, saying existing 9 percent coastal and 6 percent regional boosts are inadequate.
Nearly 250 4-H members from all 16 clubs join an all-day festival at Liberty Memorial High School featuring one act plays demonstrations model meetings and folk games. Winners announced by 4 p.m. then proceed to the Ottawa regional festival on March 15. Judges include Wilson O Connell Mrs Russell Wiley Larry Heeh Mrs Donna Kempton and Donald Brown.
Kansas City Kansas Feb 23 Col L J Lincoln army district engineer said soil conservation alone cannot prevent disasters. To tame major floods a mix of reservoir impoundment and protective works like levees flood walls and channel improvements is required. He cited 1951 Kansas Basin flood costs at 5 75 million and rising. Small dams cost more than a single large dam and while soil measures help sediment control they cannot replace major flood structures.
Finland shone on February 23 moving into third place after winning the women's 10 kilometer cross country and the men's 40 kilometer relay. They collected 31 points for 72 total, 124 percent behind the United States. The U S did not enter the women's race and finished 12th in the 25 mile relay.
The Granada Theater will show a close up of the Kansas state basketball game from Hoch Auditorium on Friday March 7 in a first small city theater telecast. Patrons will see the game on a 2 foot screen before a second feature. Admission will rise only nominally to cover extra costs. The plan aims to reach fans without game tickets and may later show Olympic finals football and opera on a nationwide theater circuit. The Granada will share box office receipts with KU Athletic Association.
Lawrence operates under a city manager city commission system since 1951 and will adopt two local ordinances next Tuesday detailing duties of the manager and the commission. City Manager Jim Wigglesworth says the ordinances are largely formal, already governed by state law, and the city has not operated illegally. The five commissioner board, Kraft as mayor and Hurwitz as vice chairman, governs city functions with annual leadership rotations.
Dodge City reports the state has closed the Farmers' Co-Op Elevator at Lucas Kansas due to a 910 bushel wheat shortage. Grain inspector A P Emrie estimated the wheat value between 2000 and 20000 and noted 50000 bushels are out of condition. He said there may be no loss to depositors but the board plans a reorganization meeting next week to consider reopening with working capital.
