Piedmont Missouri Pacific fast Texas to St Louis No 8 derailed by rock slide in a cut south of Gads Hill yesterday night. No injuries reported. Both diesel locomotive and storage baggage car derailed. Trains between Poplar Bluff and St Louis rerouted via Belmont and Cairo branches from Bismarck to Poplar Bluff. Engineer J P Carroll, fireman Jess Love lace, conductor WF Missey named.
Wichita Kansas February 23 A man aged year old was hospitalized with a self inflicted bullet wound to the temple after threatening four policemen at his Augusta home His wife called police when he threatened to kill her and himself Patrolman Liogd Vincent identified the man as ill Rodden He met officers at the door armed with a .22 rifle and after threatening to kill them fled inside then shot himself. The U S minister to Bulgaria Donald RB Heath and staff are to arrive in Trieste Sunday en route from Sofia as the United States cut off relations with the communist state and 48 diplomats begin the westward journey. Washington February 23 The threat of a nationwide telephone service breakdown was averted as union acceptance of a 56 day bargaining truce prompted by President Beirne of the C I O. The strike of 160000 workers was postponed with 120000 more due March 2 under the same pause. President Truman pledged uninterrupted service while talks continue aided by federal mediation. Western Electric stalemate persisted after 45 hours as agents sought terms and New Jersey Bell workers remain under state mediation.
Washington reports say John L. Lewis and coal operators narrowed their gap in bargaining for a new mining contract. Operators offered to raise concessions slightly as pressure grows to end strikes and fuel shortages, with fears of government seizure of mines and federal control. Labor leaders warn of fines and potential action if strikes continue.
Washington reports the House approved a fair employment practices bill by 240 to 176 but removed enforcement provisions. The measure, far short of President Truman’s aims, heads to the Senate with Democratic and Republican support and opposition showing a split along party lines. Southern Democrats helped strip enforcement and the bill now relies on persuasion rather than penalties.
Manchester physician Dr. Hermann N. Sander’s defense lawyer, Louis E. Wyman, suggested the accused may have faced a death before air injections were given. Prosecutors told a 13 juror panel that Mrs. Abbie Borreto, 59, died after the alleged act, hinting at a possible strategy to argue prior death.
The two day Art Education conference at the University of Kansas begins tomorrow with 52 advance registrations. E. J. MacFarland of KU extension bureau notes round table discussions and addresses by Professor Viktor Lowenfeld. The event targets KU art students and elementary teachers from Kansas.
Authorities report an RCAF Dakota transport crash near Whitehorse Yukon Territory during Exercise Sweetbriar. One man injured, five crew and 13 passengers uninjured, wireless operator with a fractured jaw. Among 80 Canadian aircraft in the 11 day exercise, 10 percent have had incidents.
At a Kiwanis luncheon two speakers Dean Moreau and Professor John Ise urged stronger Western unity. Moreau pressed the need for a federal union and a common currency while noting regionalism remains. Ise highlighted U S leadership and the chaotic international monetary system urging Western unification to survive.
Sheriff's forces and highway patrol captured two youths in a stolen car at Eudora after a 100 mph chase through south Douglas county. Driver Rufus LeRor Brown 19 Camas Wash and Maurice Du Bois 20 Cardin Okla were jailed for investigation. a third occupant Harold Branscom Kansas City said he was en route to Kansas City. The 1949 green Hudson sedan was reported stolen from Alma Ark. No weapons reported.

A nor’easter blanketed the eastern half of the nation with snow sleet and freezing rain causing hazardous travel. Cities from New York to Pennsylvania reported icy roads and flight disruptions as whiteouts and power across the region.
About 40 veterans and guests attended a reunion of former Battery B, 130th Field Artillery, World War I, 31st Division, at the Community building. A banquet was served by women of the Liberty-Dorsey post. Dr J M Jewett attended as battalion commander, with Judge Hugh Means among guests. Local attendees included Mr and Mrs George Dunkley, Mr and Mrs Edward Brass, Mr and Mrs Earl Durbin, Sheriff and Mrs Will Johns Jr, Mr and Mrs Jesse Davis, Ray Ogden, Dr W H Harr, George Breakey and Roy Meadows. Jesse Davis was elected commander, Harry Martin of Stamps Arkansas named vice commander, and Claude Buckner of Ottawa secretary treasurer.
Abilene businessmen who toured both Kansas Citys were praised for their enterprise by J R Halladas public relations director of the Kansas State Chamber of Commerce at a dinner for the 56 member party. Henry B Jameson president of the FedI Chamber of Commerce said they came to learn about Kansas City and to sell Abilene and they believed they had accomplished both.

Curtis Coffey a Brewster junior has been named co ordinator for the 1950 College Daze show at the University of Kansas. He will oversee business operations and stage production. The event titled West of Abilene is set for May 25 with Gene Hall as music director and Donald Welton as stage manager. Script and lyrics were by Craig Hampton with music by Robert Yooper and Willard Straight. Auditions for 21 men and 1 woman are underway.
Hunters gather at Kanwaka Township Hall six miles west of Lawrence on highway 40 for a nine square mile wolf drive sponsored by the community. Yesterday near Stull a drive netted 12 coyotes. Vern Swallow of Stull led the east line and sponsors included Scull Berryton Richland and Watfox.
Mrs. Art Wolf chairs the Women's Division of the 1980 Red Cross drive as 254 volunteers are summoned for a March 1 kickoff. Meeting at 10 am in the Community building basement dining room will brief workers on doorbell fundraising and kit supplies, with Lois Snyder from St. Louis aiding. A long volunteer roster by precinct lists captains and workers in First, Second, and Third wards, detailing names and assignments for the Douglas county chapter.
About $120 was taken from 13 members of the Delta Upsilon fraternity at 1025 West Hills Parkway overnight. Lt. Ralph Hubbell said residents saw no sign of the intruder and no leads exist. The money was taken from bureaus and study tables. earlier similar KU house thefts last seen two years ago. List of victims and amounts includes Eddie Maag 24, Kendrick C. Davidson 20, John H. Twenty two members of the executive and other committees of the Citizens' group backing a City Manager Commission form met to review progress and plan future moves in Lawrence. Reports from committee heads and a review of the form were given by campaign chairman Richard Stevens. The publicity group turned over brochures to printers to educate citizens on the new government. John Chaney was named to lead a residential area organization to cover blocks in the campaign.
Washington Feb 23 The Economic Cooperation Administration announced new foreign aid allotments authorizing Britain to buy 45 million dollars of American grain under the Marshall plan. The package includes 30 million for Canadian wheat and 15 million for U S wheat and flour with contracts to be completed by May 11 and deliveries by dates in July and June.

Topeka Feb 24 Kansas see-saw weather shifts back to cold at night with snow flurries possible Friday. Forecaster Richard Garrett predicts lows 15-20 in west and north central areas and 24-32 elsewhere, highs Friday 20-25 in west and north central, up to 32 in the southeast. Temperatures rose yesterday to readings around 40s or 50s. Anthony and Hutchinson reported 84 in the past.
City records show 14 800 names on the eligible voter list. 78 percent of nonvoters registered so far as of 18 p.m. tomorrow. City Clerk Harold Fisher notes many on the rolls moved or died since 1948 and that retirees to register include those who did not vote or changed address since last election. Poll books close at 10 p.m. tomorrow and will reopen after the primary. Candidates may file for six city council posts by deadline.
The weaving center at Ninth and New Hampshire streets opened today under director Mr. Jack Bowen. The recreation commission announced the center will be open again next Tuesday after noon and evening, inviting any interested persons to attend.
In the third ward Thomas B. Parker a Lawrence Buick dealer and Charles Sherrick compete for the Republican nomination while Luther Buchele seeks the Democratic nod unopposed. Parker and Sherrick contest will decide the Republican candidate for the April 4 city council election. The field includes candidates in all wards with several incumbents not running again.
A CAP meeting will open next week at Municipal airport with weather and military correspondence courses. The Lawrence group plans to meet and flight inspections by state officials will occur at the airport. Stock market index shows 60 stocks averaging 73.3 with no change.
