Paper Firm Enjoys Rich History Here
Operating quietly at the foot of New Hampshire Street is a company that helped put Lawrence on its feet in the 1880s. Today the firm ships its products to points from California to the Mississippi River and has more employees than any other business in Lawrence. This year the Lawrence Paper Company can look back on 75 years of steady growth and look ahead to greater development. The mill began in 1882 producing meat wrapping paper and other heavy wrapping papers from straw. The plant was damaged in the 1911 tornado but restored better than before. It is the oldest paper manufacturing establishment west of the Mississippi River with later shifts to corrugating boxes and automatic machinery. The company’s history traces from J D Bowersock’s early building efforts to current leadership under the Hill family.
