Lawmakers urged to nix alcohol tax hike in Kansas plan
Former Budget Director Steve Anderson joined business leaders and industry lobbyists in opposing Gov. Brownback proposal to raise alcohol and tobacco taxes. House Speaker Ray Merrick also voiced opposition as hearings began. The plan would lift alcohol tax to 12 percent from 8 and cigarette tax to 2.29 per pack, aiming to ease a nearly 600 million budget shortfall.

Western leg of SLT shows high fatality rate
City county and school officials reviewed the South Lawrence Trafficway western leg noting fatalities run about 55 percent above the Kansas road average. From 2000 to 2013 there were nine and three deaths respectively on the SLT segments from Iowa Street to the Turnpike and from Iowa Street to Highway 10. House panel rejects Regents funding requests
The Kansas House Appropriations Committee refused to reconsider enhanced budget requests from the six Regents universities, including KU’s bid for a Drug and Vaccine Discovery Institute. It did reinstate 1.5 million for an employment incentive program and 51.2 million in bonding for a KU residence hall plus 14.5 million for Corbin Hall renovations. Rep.
