Korean War death mourned for Haskell student Pfe
Vernon L Mehickteno 18 of Topeka was killed January 30 in Korea, the first Haskell Institute student to die in the war. His mother Mary Ann Rosario of Topeka was notified by telegram. A brother Marvin Mzhicktens was wounded the same day. Vernon, a Potawatomi, had been at Haskell briefly in 1948 and was 17 when he enlisted with his brother on July 27 1950. They shipped to Korea December 27. He served with the 86th field artillery. Born on a Mayetta farm, he attended East Topeka junior high before Haskell. Surviving relatives include father Pete Mzhicktens of Mayetta, sister Pauline DeWitt of Topeka, and brother LaRue Mzhickteno of Topeka.

Tyle Stemmerman a 17 year old son of A W Stemmerman of 422 Mississippi street returned home after three days in Lawrence Memorial hospital with a brain concussion from a bobsled crash on West Sixth street. Bill Hogan, 15, son of Alma Hogan of 1409 Rhode Island street, suffered a fractured wrist and remained at home. Three other teens David Hill Fred Wright and Paul Hernar Jr were treated and released. Stemmerman, the most seriously hurt, may return to school in a few days. The sled struck a parked car as it was being pulled behind a new stock market index updated later in the report.
