Jail expansion faces mixed views from county panelists
Justice Matters and Lawrence Sunset Alliance members Joanna Harader and Patrick Wilbur criticized the jail expansion and ballot wording while supporting behavioral health efforts. They argued the plan tied to a half cent sales tax would raise 9.8 million annually for a 44 million jail and 11 million behavioral health campus, with 5.1 million for new programs. The panel also heard defenses of the jail expansion by Thellman and Brouwer, who cited state statutes and overcrowding. Ballots mailed April 25 and counted May 15.
