Souvenirs found in Liberty Bell 7 restoration
Five 1957 silver certificates hidden aboard the Liberty Bell 7 were uncovered during restoration at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center. The bills were rolled and placed inside a wiring harness under the hatch, with signatures from Gus Grissom and launch group members on some. Restorers noted the era’s habit of crews concealing souvenirs, contrasting with today’s tighter NASA controls. The capsule, recovered from the Atlantic in 1999, is slated for a three year tour before permanent display.
