Secretary Benson told more than 1,000 at the National Farm Institute in Des Moines that the Eisenhower farm program must pass quickly and take effect this year to ease farm distress, attack the surplus problem, and raise farmers’ incomes. Outside, anti Benson protesters carried signs during the event.
Herschel D. Newsom and James G. Patton urged market-based price supports to reduce surplus crops. Newsom proposed per commodity market prices for exports while Patton backed 100 percent parity. Benson praised the Senate Agriculture Committee soil bank plan but lamented revival of 90 percent wartime supports.
Eugene A. Stephenson professor emeritus of petroleum engineering at E.U. testified in Sterling Colorado in a mineral and oil rights case over 160 acres owned by Sara M. Radke and Edward Karr. The verdict, due mid May, could affect about 16 million acres of western lands. He addressed whether oil is mineral and if oil and gas were present when lands were sold by the railroad in the 19th century.
A local tale recounts Duke, an undefeated West Ni a Yo-Yo champion, who rigged a trick during tryouts for the Yo-Yo Team. Judges grew suspicious after a device spun for hours and the tournament was seized. Duke’s protests and mass leaflets failed to restore his status.
In Damascus the Saudi Arabian ambassador said the U.S. cancellation of a shipment of 18 light tanks to Saudi Arabia set a serious precedent in U.S. Saudi relations. He blamed Zionist pressure for the move and said Riyadh was very displeased. Ambassador Shiek Abdulazis ben Zeid spoke after questions about effects on defense and oil interests.
Light snow and scattered showers are forecast across Kansas with warmer air giving way to increasing clouds and colder conditions tonight. Sunday brings more scattered showers in the southeast and light rain or snow in the northeast with light snow in the west during the forenoon.

Harold E. Whitey Dahl, famed adventurer and former Spanish Civil War survivor, died when his DC3 crashed over northern Quebec while ferrying a cargo airplane. A Canadian search plane recovered Dahl's body alongside a second victim and one survivor, Eric Pearson of Miami. Walt Givens, also from Miami, was named as the other deceased. Dahl had a theft conviction and an appeal pending from an aerial gold cargo disappearance. Born in Champaign Illinois, he entered aviation in the Lindbergh era.
Topeka Kansas State College received approval from the board of regents to select a private architect and prepare plans for a student health center. The regents also authorized Fort Hays State College to seek state architect plans for a women's dormitory addition for about 450 students. Officials plan to request 1957 legislative funding from the educational funding fund for the health unit and to finance the dormitory with earmarked educational building funds.
Lawrence University Veterans Organization at Kansas University will hold its spring election Monday night in the Jayhawk Room Memorial Union Building. The group will elect officers and discuss plans for its annual orphans Easter egg hunt on March 25. Police warn motorists displaying both 1955 and 1956 plates. arrests soon expected with fines from five to fifty dollars for keeping old plates after new ones.
Grace Kelly will have London's festival ballet company perform six times at the Monaco wedding events. The first show is the eve of the wedding in the palace courtyard, a gala at the Monte Carlo Opera House on April 18, and a new ballet is created in honor of the couple. The troupe will take about 80 dancers to Monaco.
A meeting to organize the National Farm Organization of Leavenworth County was held Thursday night at Bowling Green. Four hundred seven members signed up with Ed Hutchinson as chairman and J. R. Clevenger as vice chairman. Ship totals include Reno 73 Sherman 40 Alexander 23 Fairmont 36 High Prairie 58 Kickapoo 79 Easton 98. In Reno Township 73 of 80 farmers contacted joined. Othal Wiley leads Reno Township, Arnold Tordenen is vice chairman, and Herbert Selwald is secretary-treasurer.

Richard Fr Spiering 19 of Sunflower and Robert A Martynowski 21 of Leavenworth received 90 day jail terms in Johnson County Magistrate Court after a pursuit through Sunflower. Spiering was fined 100 dollars for DUI as the car nearly struck Civil Defense Sgt Edward Blaygrave and Patrolman Robert Hensley who opened fire, ending with tires punctured and the suspects fleeing toward Highway K-10.
At Memorial Hospital admitted Frank Roe of Eudora Mrs Arlene Holtzclaw of H and M Trailer Court Mrs Eleanor Wilkinson of 1528 Vermont Clarerice Reynolds of 2019 Hillview Road. Dismissed include Fern Miller of Eudora Lois Ormond and baby girl of 932 Miss St Nancy Mechavich Route 4 Brenda Neal 1348 Engel Road. Births report Leroy Hadi and wife 1522 WW 22nd St a son born Friday.
Dr. Charles D. Kochakian, research coordinator for the Oklahoma Research Foundation, will speak at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Haworth Hall, Kansas University. His lecture topic is Regulation of Tissue Enzymes by Androgens. He is a Boston and Rochester graduate and has worked with the foundation for five years.
Kenneth T. Anderson, a Kansas Democratic committeeman, said Stevenson is slated for the nomination on the first or second ballot. He cited public opinion polls showing Stevenson well ahead of other candidates and stated he opposes instructing the Kansas delegation at the Democratic national convention.
A divorce was granted Thursday in District Court to Lola Housworth from Hurl Wilson Housworth.
A homemade time bomb exploded on a loading platform at the main New Orleans post office. Two employees, Leonard J. Payton and Bourbon Wells Sr., suffered minor injuries while extinguishing a fire. The bomb was in a mail bag from a truck. postal inspectors found wire and glass fragments. Inspector Zarza declined to identify the sender or addressee from the damaged package.
Seven inmates including the Karabelas brothers escaped Webb County Jail in Laredo before midnight by overpowering the jailer. Officers set roadblocks as they pursued the fugitives. The men allegedly pried open a door after loosening a jail bar. Chief Fleeg was badly beaten during the escape. The Karabelas brothers Michael John 28 and Spiro Peter 31 were convicted in a kidnapping case and are sought in California for police shooting charges. Others include James Belton 23 from New York awaiting transfer for a 9 year sentence for assault with intent to murder and three Tulsa, Oklahoma men Charles Waymire 20 William J. Lee 21 Richard Bernard 25 on heroin charges, plus Ralph Victor Gordon 43 of San Mateo California held on a 20,000 dollar bond coaster. Gordon was jailed awaiting funds.

Dr Rees Hughes president of Kansas State Teachers College since 1941 is to be installed today as president of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education in Chicago. He previously served as superintendent at Parsons and Fort Scott.
