Bulletin from San Francisco reports the ferry Peralta plunged into San Francisco Bay during the evening rush, leaving multiple missing as rescuers and witnesses describe panic, lifeboats, and ballast tank theories amid ongoing investigations by federal and state officials.
Victims recount being swept from the Peralta as a bay disaster sent passengers into the sea. Peggy Naylor, 16, of Oakland, credited swimming and a Hayward lifeboat with saving her after the bow water surge and rail loss. Ralph Mack, also from Oakland, described swimming free and being rescued by a lifeboat. H. M. Thatcher and T. W. Parsons, both Oakland residents, swam to safety aboard the Hayward vessel, with Parsons noting at least fifty were thrown overboard.
Contempt of court against Manny Akers A W Jarman and Jewell Hartman of Lawson Mo for attempting to influence prospective jurors in the third DeMayo trial were continued until next Wednesday by Federal Judge Albert L Reeves. The charges followed a jury disagreement in the DeMayo Carnihaw conspiracy case.
The Lawrence school dramatics club, sponsored by Mrs Bertia Wilson, will present three plays next week including The Valiant Tizan of Bath and The Boy Home. Students named to participate.
Forecast notes overall fair weather with brief precipitation gaps and near normal temperatures across upper Alisaissippi and lower Missouri valleys and northern central plains. Rocky Mountain region shows fair conditions with near normal temperatures. Kansas expects fair tonight and Sunday with varying warmth in east and south. Roads: clear in most towns, scattered cloudy areas. Manhattan rough, Hutchinson and Topeka fair, Salina Coffeyville fair, Wichita rough, Dodge City muddy, Arkansas City frozen, Douglas County fair.
Washington reports Mrs Evangeline Lindbergh will be awarded a gold emblem and life membership in the National Education Association at its Boston convention March 1 7 for modesty idealism and outstanding teaching. War Department and National Aeronautic Association plan to bring her to Boston by plane. Col Charles A Lindbergh is expected to attend in the Spirit of St Louis with other details pending.
Mrs Edna O Whitcomb of Lawrence wins first prize for poetry in the Kansas Authors club annual contest with the sonnet Autumn worth 40 dollars. Emma K Scott of McPherson wins second prize for For You and Georgia Neville Tasker of Topeka third for A Charm Against Sorrow.
A City meeting called by Mayor Adams of Eudora postponed Friday due to small turnout as residents discuss stopping Kaw river erosion threatening state highway 10, bridge and farm land near Endora. A further meeting will be set as farmers are busy. County engineers Meisner and Trueblood have surveyed conditions and the commission pledges aid to jetty construction to halt river damage.
Four Lawrence high school students Marjorie Kiefer Clayton Lott Alice May De Forest and Bruce Dunn were selected to sing in the National High School concert in Chicago April 16 to 20. They were recommended by Superintendent W W Curfman and Lawrence High principal John R Barnes after meeting requirements by singing two difficult numbers and taking part in the Lawrence chorus. The National chorus will include over 800 students from across the country and the four Lawrence students may also enter a quartet contest held with the concert.

In Macon Georgia a mid air explosion during an air carnival caused a plane to crash on Cherry Street. Pilot Buck Steele of Shreveport and instructor C E Murphy of Missouri were killed. One pedestrian died later in hospital and many others were injured. The wreckage tore into a sidewalk and struck bystanders as the aircraft plummeted.
Announcement states H L Linscott buys rights and contracts of the Business Men's Credit Exchange from H W Fursman on January 19 uniting Merchants' Credit Bureau with the former. Consolidated office will be Room 6 Peoples State Bank building. First act is publishing a credit rating guide covering Baldwin Perry Edgora Tonmanoxie and nearby towns alongside Lawrence. Fursman moves to To Bake to operate Business Men's Credit Exchange there.
AP reports Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh forced to abandon a monoplane at Springfield Illinois due to a leaking oil tank. He then returned to Lambert-St. Louis field at 1 45 pm and left a second mailplane for Peoria to continue air mail route inspections for next week.
Two men trained in lying at Brooksfield San Antonio passed air test examinations at Fort Riley yesterday. William Hodson of 520 Ohio Street joins Battalion Headquarters Company of the 137th Infantry Kansas National Guard. William Campbell of El Dorado, a university student and Sigma Alpha Epsilon member, also cleared. They report to Brooksfield about March 15.
Frank Supplee 23 was wounded in a gun battle with St. Louis detectives and denied involvement in the kidnapping of Prof. Fred N. Raymond of the University or the theft of his Buick. Chief Gerk reported Supplee admitted only to holding up Osage County Marshal Jake Christensen with his brother Charles, who was killed in the St. Louis shootout. They had traveled from Topeka by bus and the car was later found in Topeka.
In St Louis on February 18 AP reports Detective Ralph Johnson lay critically ill after a shooting by Frank Supplee. Blood transfusions were planned with ten officers donating as Johnson’s condition dangled between life and death. Johnson’s wife Margaret saved a pint of her blood for the emergency. Meanwhile Charles Supplee faced unlawful homicide charges, with pursuit tying back to stolen weapons and car theft tied to an Osage City burglary case.
The Pan American union convention, a key boneo convention in the present American congress, was approved in a plenary session. The Argentine delegation agreed to sign with reservations over missing economic principles, and Honorio Pueyrredon resigned over a tariff barrier clause. Montevideo, Uruguay, was chosen for the next Pan American conference.
Kansas State Agricultural College experts demonstrated the government pork curing formula at a farm southeast of Lawrence. Ten people attended as dairy officials, including L Gilkison, discussed planned two day butchering events for next year. Police chief Will Johns cautioned dog owners to prevent pest exposure and advised precautions.
The GOP district convention in Olathe will select two delegates to the Republican national convention in Kansas City this June. Douglas county names M. A. Gorrill, George K. Melvin, W. H. Hoskinson, and others as candidates with twenty delegates and as many alternates chosen to represent Douglas at the meeting. The Second district convention will be the state's first district gathering this year.
Topeka reports a Shawnee county meeting endorses Republican gubernatorial candidate John D. Hamilton of Topeka and reelects David W. Mulvane of Topeka as national Republican committee man. Also notes a new trial for teacher Miss Mary Hickman in a whipping case in Kansas City.
Rome February 18 AP Mussolini declares campaign success in Sicily and turns to purge banditry in Sardinia. Premier says remnants in the center must be destroyed at any cost. Carabinieri are trained and will finish the job. Club sponsors clinics.
Orthopedics and mental health clinics sponsored by the Kiwanis club will be held next week at Lawrence city hall. A nervous clinic led by Dr Leonard Harrington runs Thursday morning February 23 from 9 to 11. The orthopedic clinic begins Friday February 24 at 1 PM and ends at noon at Jessner Theater. Dr C B Francisco leads the medical sessions. The senior play committee is announced by Miss Aliard, with the Lawrence High Echo noting the event.
New York February report states Mayor James J. Walker travels to New Orleans for Mardi Gras with a party of friends. He will stop in Baltimore for a speech and returns next Saturday. The wardrobe includes seven hats two dress suits dinner coats and about 100 neckties among other items.
Federal officer Major John C. French and Colonel Charles Brown led the annual review of Company D, 137th Infantry and Headquarters Company, First Battalion, Kansas National Guard in Lawrence. Sixty three of sixty five Company D members were present. Headquarters Company displayed strong knowledge of communications. First Lieutenant Ray mond T. Wright was absent ill. The two units were praised for appearance and performance, with a large crowd watching and town officials optimistic about the results.
Five of seventy Lawrence women who answered the Jenny Wren flour knock on door appeal were given a dollar and another flour package Friday evening. The promotion aimed to spread Jenny Wren flour by inviting households to display a flour box when callers came. more earners would follow. Rewarded women included Mrs T R Gerhart, 2115 New Hampshire. Mrs Frank Dunkley, 633 Maine. Mrs Charles Bayles, 1909 New Hampshire. Mrs S A Johnson, 15 Elm. and Miss Jane Sheets, 622 Ohio.
Joplin Missouri February 18 AP Bank of Asbury was robbed last night as a Batts red safe with three combination dials resisted opening Officials could not determine if money was taken and believe robbers tampered with the tumblers Contact lines indicate two suspects one in custody and the other at large and a detective from Joplin is involved
Local residents organize a flying club affiliated with the National Aeronautic Association. Twenty nine members join, nearing the 125 member Lawrence quota. A meeting at the Chamber of Commerce is set for tomorrow at 2 PM to continue organizing the local chapter and invite all interested, including women.
Letters from the Chancellor’s office invite presidents of student organizations to a Monday meeting. The purpose is to gauge student opinion on a possible campaign to raise funds to complete furnishings for the upper floors of the new Union building. If supported, a campus drive may be organized among students at the University.
Reports from China detail a February 9 incident on the Edmore where Chief Officer F R Willarts allegedly shot at four Chinese, wounding one boatman fatally. The event triggers threats of a boycott of American goods by Chinese labor unions and waterfront workers.
