Civil service pay plan blamed for turnover at KUMC Topeka
Kansas University Medical Center officials told the Board of Regents that civil service pay limits fuel a 41 percent annual turnover among clerical, nursing and maintenance staff. Mills cited nurse vacancies and unfilled licensed practical nurse positions, noting low starting wages, small raises, and no shift differential as driving factors. The study compared KUMC pay to five KC area hospitals, all with higher starting wages and shift differentials. The group discussed a proposed classified pay plan and a Kansas City differential, with leaders noting political hurdles to salary increases and urging interim steps to improve retention amid a $58 million hospital expansion.
