Calving Season Tests Farmer Resolve in Snowbound Nebraska
Jim Neis and brothers Dale and Stan run about 300 cows on 4000 acres in Douglas County. Calves arrive January to March. up to 15 calves daily during peak season, with midnight checks and frigid rescues for newborns. They endure bitter cold, snow, and road vigilance as they protect the herd and supply meat for others. The farm operates as part of the food chain, aiming for warmer weather by April as tractors return to fields.
