Western Resources Reports Higher Earnings In 1997
Western Resources Inc. of Topeka said earnings rose for 1997 despite a fourth quarter loss of 79.65 million dollars or 1.24 a share as Kansas City Power & Light bid, rate cuts, and other issues weighed on the quarter. For the year net income reached 494.09 million dollars or 7.51 a share, up from 168.95 million or 2.41 a share in 1996, with Chairman John E. Hayes Jr. signaling a merger with KCP&L could be completed but may take months.
