Kennedy asks Congress for 1961 feed grain emergency plan
President Kennedy sent Congress recommendations for a 1961 feed grain program to cut surpluses raise producer income and trim farm outlays. It would raise corn supports to 1.20 a bushel and similar rises for oats barley and sorghum with a 20 percent retirement of feed grain land. It also raises soybean supports to 2.30 a bushel aimed at shifting land to soybeans.

Fire alarm at KU campus lobby prompts three fire units
A smoking fluorescent light fixture in the main lobby of the Kansas Union caused a fire alarm Wednesday night. Three Lawrence Fire Department engines responded around 9 25. Union director Frank Burge said the defective fixture began smoldering and was quickly removed. No fire damage occurred.

Balloon Up But U S Not Certain It Attains Orbit
The 12 foot balloon type launch from Wallops Island Va aimed for orbit but hours later officials could not confirm it. NASA said the fourth stage likely reached orbit while still uncertain if the balloon itself completed a full orbit. Heart Fund Drive Officially Opens in Douglas County

Regents Seek Added Funds for KU Medical Site
The Board of Regents urged about 1.56 million dollars in extra funds for the University of Kansas Medical Center. One million would finance rooms along a corridor in the Kansas City Wan facility and 400 to 500 thousand for an addition to the clinic building. Regents also sought 25 thousand dollars in survey funds and a 150 thousand dollar revolving construction fund. Freshman enrollment at the five state colleges rose 1,263 in one year, a 23.6 percent gain.
