Kansas fish and game warden Prof L L Dyche returns from the National convention in New Orleans. He denounces the Mardi Gras and southern manners, praising northern hospitality while noting Creoles Orioles and Seminoles as topics he encountered. He emphasizes preferring the good old northern country over southern charm.
Kansas University defeated Baker 771-3 to 172-3 in a dull meet at Robinson gymnasium. Kansas athletes showed superior mettle, with Haddock expected to win honors in the upcoming Missouri meet as he is in good form this year.
The Lawrence Street Car Company dismissed three conductors accused of knocking down fares. Spotters had been used to detect the offenses, and the company kept names confidential to avoid harming future job prospects. All three had long tenures with the firm, working at various points along the line.
Chicago reports a western press poll on presidential favoritism among Republican editors. Theodore Roosevelt ranks first with Taft as the only other strong candidate, La Follette leads in Wisconsin, Hughes has broad support, and Cannon and Pinchot receive few votes. Roosevelt leads the lake states and carries two thirds of the states. Taft leads in several others with totals under Roosevelt.
Governor Stubbs spoke in town to discuss his work and Kansas prosperity. He praised state growth and high prices, predicted a record year ahead, and defended past political battles as principled. He attended his step grandmother’s funeral in Hesper, noting good health and enjoyment of his duties.
Harry Herrman, chairman of the national commission, announced Kling will be reinstated after applying for reinstatement. Kling must pay a heavy fine, about $1,000, as a condition of the approval.
Two young children aged four and one perished in a Centerville area house fire that destroyed the Piersee home. The mother had left the children alone and the father was nearby working, but did not see the blaze start. The incident occurred early today in Des Moines Iowa with authorities investigating cause.
Governor Hadley challenges Senator Stone to consent to a recount of Missouri primary ballots. If recount shows Stone not nominated, Hadley will appoint Folk as Stone’s successor and may run against Stone. Also notes burglaries in Hot Springs, paving scandal in Cincinnati, smallpox aboard the cruiser Washington, and weather notes in Chicago.
Lawrence hosts two famed figures this week at Kansas University. Dr Paul Shorey of Chicago University lectures daily at 4 30 in the afternoon on ancient thought and modern literature with chapel talks Friday and a Vespers address Sunday. Percival Lowell, renowned astronomer, lectures tonight at University hall on Mars.
Kansas City notes revised Mokay stadium plan as Walter H. Holmes Jr proposes leasing the grounds with wooden stands for 30 000 seats. Capital raised cut to 350 000 with 6 percent net returns and surplus funding to stockholders. A KU committee led by Prof C E McClung Dr James Naismith and W Lansden will meet Holmes tomorrow to finalize details.

Washington reports a dull session of the Ballinger-Pinchot investigation as attorney Vertrees seeks subpoenas for Glavis successor Achrisen and others. The committee met in executive session to weigh a Seattle report detailing alleged discovery of twenty four missing letters from official files.
