Kansas House trims KPERS delay plan in budget talks
The Kansas House Appropriations Committee backed delaying the final KPERS payment while routing half of year end surpluses to the pension fund and adding a rainy day provision if the full payment is made. Critics warned against ongoing borrowing, arguing for steady KPERS funding, as the panel also eyed a Lansing Prison modernization lease purchase to cut long term operating costs.

Whitewater project aims to draw 700000 visitors to Clinton Lake State Park
Lawrence leaders push a staged plan for a man made whitewater course with 30 to 40 acre footprint, trails expanding to 50 miles, and a conservatively managed open landscape. Jeff Wise of the National Whitewater Center says water comes from local supplies, runoff is controlled, and open land surrounds development. The plan, tied to Kansas image building, envisions tourism benefits though critics worry about environmental impact. More details to follow in Town Talk.
