Police leaders brief city commissioners on Tuesday night to approve emergency funding of about 24000 for evidence storage space at the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center. Officials say the cramped storage has become potentially dangerous, following prior resistance to a 28 million plan for a new headquarters. A structural engineer was hired to assess the risk.
A December assessment by Bob D Campbell and Co found the weight of evidence in second and third floor rooms exceeds floor capacity by about 35 percent. The current evidence storage area fails building codes. In the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center the main storage is a gym space now stacked with boxes and a steel two level inside staircase. The department will release or destroy evidence after reviewing old cases and obtaining approvals from the District Attorney and U S Attorney's Office.
Kansas University and the Lawrence Police Department unveil a memorandum of understanding to formalize cooperation on sexual violence investigations. The plan defines acts of sexual violence and aligns police procedures with university policy as the City Commission prepares to approve the pact.
After more than nine hours of deliberations jurors failed to reach a verdict in Dustin D. Walker's first degree murder case. Walker, 30, of Lawrence, faces trial for the March 2014 shooting death.
