Kansas asks extension on No Child Left Behind waiver

State education officials told the Kansas State Board of Education on Wednesday they plan to seek a federal extension of the waiver from No Child Left Behind requirements. The waiver, granted in 2012, allows districts to use a multi measure system rather than AYP, while teachers and administrators remain accountable for student progress. Deputy Education Commissioner Brad Neuenswander said waivers were never meant to be long term and noted the Obama administration expected Congress to overhaul the law, which has not occurred. Kansas risked losing the waiver after not fully implementing the new evaluation system, prompting a high risk notice from the U.S. Department of Education last year.
