The Oskaloosa bank had a 2,000 pound vault door that wouldn’t fit through the main door. Workers laid it outside on the sidewalk until they found a solution. They turned the door on edge and slid it inside, a fix praised by Patrick who said he didn’t worry about it but it was solved well.
Lawrence High School plans a new request portion in the annual For Your Song musical directed by R Wayne Nelson. Cards listing popular songs must reach Nelson by March 1. In KU news, A C Lonborg adds foul tracking at scorers table. Lawrence High earns unqualified recommendation for continued NCACS membership, a 55 year continuous record.
The Douglas County Coonhunters host their annual banquet at 7 30 tonight at the Lawrence Community Building. About 400 are expected for the feast featuring barbecued young raccoon and beaver with chicken and ham. Entertainment includes sports movies cards dancing and more.
Kansas Power and Light Co reports 1959 earnings per share of $2.40, up from $1.91 in 1958. Sales climbed from $49.63 million to $54.30 million, a $4.67 million or 9 percent gain. The firm attributes gains to efficient management and unchanged electric rates, unlike neighboring telephone and gas utilities which raised rates.
Admissions list includes Mrs. Mary Sword and others with addresses in Mississippi Alabama Vermont and more. Births note a daughter to Mr and Mrs Christopher Sword and another to Mr and Mrs Gary Steiner plus two additional newborns today at Memorial Hospital.

Walter H. Toberman, Missouri secretary of state, died in Jefferson City at Memorial Hospital from cancer at age 80. A patient since December 3, Toberman had faced major illnesses in 1951 and again last year, undergoing surgery but returning to run his office before his death.
London AP reports crowds form early outside Buckingham Palace awaiting Queen Elizabeth II’s baby. Spectators pace beside guards, park nearby, and televisions and newsreel crews position cameras. The Queen, a mother again, stayed in Friday after a week of outings.
Four youths including Robert M Curran and his brother John A Curran along with Robert F Hogan and Lawrence Donohue were arrested in a three county area for six burglaries. They admitted involvement and most loot was recovered. All four faced grand larceny charges as of the arrest.
Mrs Rose Anna Cassidy 90 of Cummings died Friday at Prospect Park Sanitarium after eight months as patient. Survivors include two sons Myron G Cassidy and Joseph F Cassidy, eight great grandchildren and a foster daughter. Alice B Owens 64 of Lawrence died at home. Funeral 2 pm Monday Second Christian Church with burial Oak Hill. Surviving son Luther C Davis sister Angie Reynolds and brother William Burrows. Minnie Taylor 4 of 1326 North J Street died this morning at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after 11 years in Lawrence from St. Joseph. Funeral arrangements by Cooper Warren Mortuary. Survived by husband Silas two daughters Barbara and Maller two sons Silas Jr and Nils and three sisters.
Phil J. Gengler of Route 2 says he will withdraw his name from consideration for the Republican nomination for sheriff though county records show no official withdrawal yet. He cites friends and a perceived losing race and leaves Undersheriff Ben Bowen, deputy P. W. Jones, and former undersheriff Charles Edmondson as remaining Republican contenders.
Douglas County Republican Central Committee hosted a Lincoln Day Banquet with fresh homemade pies and turkey as the featured items. Mrs. Jess Sutton led the event with extensive help from Douglas County Farm Bureau women and numerous volunteers, serving about 350 Republicans.
More than 1500 farmers and their families are expected at John Deere Day at Deems Farm Equipment Inc. East 23rd Street. Activities include Granada Theatre movies at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. A free lunch is served at noon in the showroom. New farm implements will be on display all day.

In the Police Court William Fricke 1810 Naismith Lynn Stacey 1122 W Campus and Sam Mankin 1122 W Campus were each sentenced to 10 days in jail on petty larceny charges.
