The Kansas region braces for a major storm as the eye passes overhead. Reports highlight record low barometer readings not seen in fifty years, with Lawrence among affected areas and weather services warning of severe conditions.
A massive winter storm sweeps the nation with Denver hardest hit as wires go down and trains stalled. From Kansas to Nebraska, blizzard conditions bring drifts, freezing temperatures, and scattered rain and snow while official forecasts warn of continued high winds and subfreezing air. Weather stations report record low barometer readings and widespread travel disruption across multiple states.
Snow blankets Hutchinson and surrounding areas with winds near blizzard speeds. Wires down and street signs blown through show windows mark the severity, while Arkansas City reports freezing temperatures and rain snow mix. In Wichita area, snow flurries and a 42 mph wind presage a further drop in temperatures across south central Kansas.
Washington February 13 Favorable reports on a bill to regulate the meat industry in this congress session are planned by the senate agriculture committee. Chairman Gore announced today after weeks of open hearings where representatives of all interests testified.
Ray B. Mason, in France with the 110th engineers, sent a miniature war collection to his mother Mrs Ida Mason. The items include a machine gun bullet used as a paper cutter and a brass belt buckle inscribed Gott With Us. A leather German drill helmet with a brass seal and the inscription Mitt Gott For Koenig und Vaterland stands out. A piece of shrapnel from Fort Sill completes the set. Both Ray and Robert Mason were wounded in France but returned to their unit by Christmas Eve, restoring the regiment to near its former strength.
In Paris on Feb 13 President Wilson replies to the French society of nations delegation. He will go to Washington for the closing session of Congress then return to France to attend a great public meeting celebrating peace. Departure from Paris planned Friday night with Brest embarkation Saturday. He plans to return March 15. Officials hope police conference finishes by June 1.
The Rev E A Bleck of the Presbyterian church sails to Storm Lake Iowa to conduct service meetings at Buena Vista College with Dr Stanton Qlinger president of the college and Dr F G Dill expected to oversee Pretorian church services in his absence on request of New York state board of education.
Washington reports Conrad E F Spens will take over duties of the export control committee on March 1 as assistant director of traffic in charge of export and import traffic. The government permit system for export will continue until further notice.
Mattie Neil accused Chrisman of taking her pocketbook with $12 and an ivory trinket after driving him to Eudora in her car. He allegedly sold two cars south of Eudora days earlier. Chrisman, arraigned before John Clark, faces a February 15 preliminary hearing on grand larceny charges.
A Kansas prisoner at Lansing has enrolled in the University of Kansas extension division journalism course. He is a high school graduate with prior work on the Pacific coast and is the first inmate to take extended university work. The program aims to broaden his knowledge and aid reintegration after sentence.
County engineer Lloyd Duffee sustained broken tibia and broken fibula when his horse fell on pavement this morning. He was transported to Simmons Hospital for treatment and observation.
Soldiers night will be observed at North Lawrence Christian Church this evening arranged by Rev. Thomas H. Popplewell pastor. Returned soldiers of Lawrence invited for talks with Lieut FE D Keilmann as chief speaker. veteran artilleryman and former regular army man. Meeting starts at 7:14 oclock.
Father and Son Week is celebrated with four Lawrence church banquets and programs led by the Methodist Presbyterian Baptist and Congregational churches. Speakers include Rev F S Kline Dutch Wedell Frank Strona and Paul Rankin with music by a high school quartet. The Christian church plans Sunday night services and a mixer while the Lutheran church organizes a future banquet and mixer. Dubuque hosts the Central Iowa Retail Lumbermen’s Association convention today.
Paris February 13 The supreme war council considers new armistice terms to demobilize the German army and disarm the enemy under allied supervision. Germany to cease hostilities, maintain fixed units, and face a temporary accord leading to a permanent peace. Clemenceau and Wilson stress precautions to prevent further German trouble as discussions set to resume.
State superintendent of insurance Frank Travis Tarns refuses a state voucher for his January salary. He explains he was in the United States Army in January and did not work for Kansas, though installed in office January. He recently resumed duties after returning from France as a lieutenant colonel in the Rainbow division.
London Feb 13 British delegates at the Peace Conference have been instructed to demand an indemnity covering the cost of the war and actual damages. Andrew Bonar Law announced in the House of Commons that a commission is assessing the amount, guarantees, and enforcement methods.
The shimmy arrives in Lawrence as fraternities and sororities spread word at the University of Kansas. The dance differs from the New York version and is being adopted locally, with purist forms reportedly costing as much as 25 dollars to perform in New York.
Kansas lawmen report a surge in automobile liquor seizures en route to Oklahoma. Harvey County recovered 226 quarts of whiskey with Sheriff Will Patten and Undersheriff M R Thompson leading the haul, while Marion County nabbed a liquor laden car and driver with 192 quarts. Butler County also seized a car driver with 30 quarts. All incidents show shipments were traveling from Kansas City toward Oklahoma.
On Massachusetts Street two drivers, Jerome Gilmore and Harold Meike, backed from curbs and turned without entering the block center. An officer fined each $10.50 for traffic rule violations. Railroads oppose a tax rebate bill, Kansas Senate hears W R Smith note.
Governor Henry J. Alien tartar plans to address the district Rotarian convention in Oklahoma City tomorrow amid anticipated summons to Washington to testify before congressional committees on the 35th division. No definite date has been fixed for his DC appearance.
Harold L Butler of Lawrence is president of the Kansas Music Teachers Association. The annual convention opens in Emporia with Mischa Levitski piano recital at the State Normal School and receptions after. A program of addresses, organ recital, and concerts runs through Friday at Emporia College and related venues.
Nettie Palmatteer won a verdict for 500 dollars after slipping on icy sidewalk on a bridge to North Lawrence caused by a frozen pipe. She had sought 4,000 dollars for ankle injuries. Other cases included Diehl vs Reynolds with no verdict, and awaiting decisions in Price v Jones and Lawson v Fraker.
Lieut Garver a former University of Kansas assistant professor of mechanical engineering died in Jersey City New Jersey from pneumonia after influenza. He had taught at KU for years and later served in the Naval Training school at Hoboken. Funeral set for Topeka Monday from his father Judge Garver’s home.
In Topeka Kansas on February 13 the legislature debates a state banner bill passed by the Senate and under consideration in the House. The Kansas Daughters of the American Revolution back a banner design while the Lincoln Post proposes a special flag with the motto one flier one country.
Elmer Roberts son of Mr and Mrs J O Roberts 744 Arkansas street has been discharged from a motor transport company and is now in Lawrence. He formerly served in the Kansas National Guard and re enlisted in October this time with a transport unit sent to San Antonio then Chicago where he received his discharge. Although only years old he was made a corporal in the unit. The Pike's Peak Ocean to Ocean Highway association statewide endorses a good roads constitutional amendment granting the state power to build highways. Officers elected include N J Johnson Norton president B A Libel Watheny vice president and A Q Miller Belleville secretary treasurer. Douglas county commissioners meet with Leavenworth officials to discuss damages to the Eudora bridge with no settlement by noon.
Kansas debated Senate Bill 174 by Senator Carroll creating a state Insurance Commission with power to set rates dictate policy terms and fund operations. Critics warn it would erode private insurers U.S. and spark high costs while undermining existing supervision and risk assessment. Hedge trimming crews in Ottawa under M E Alderman target dangerous highway visibility at junctions, funded by counties.
