Local Bloodhound Leads Manhunt in Leavenworth County
Sheriff Arden Rhyne says a six year old bloodhound named Bron led a manhunt which started near Loring and ended at the Leavenworth Wyandotte line on Highway 32. A fleeing man reportedly escaped past Hershel Fawyer’s home after a failed break in and may have been walking. The trail extended through Loring and north about ten miles before the track was lost. Local authorities initially suspected Leslie Caplinger, an escaped convict, but no vehicle trace was found.

In February 1952 a school bond was awarded as work began. By late 1952 officials planned another bond due to rising costs and enrollment, believing 2.6 million was insufficient. April 1953 voters approved 917000 in bonds with limited margin, earmarked for Hillcrest Centennial and other projects. Construction followed: Hillcrest 1953, Centennial East Heights and Liberty Memorial 1954, Sunset Hill 1955, plus portable classrooms and remodels. A 1954 two mill levy funded further construction.
