Erosion Expert Warns Dust Storms Could Return
W Chepil of the USDA at Kansas State College warned Friday that dust bowl conditions of the 1930s could recur if soil is not kept under cover. He cited a Greeley County study showing 9 inches of topsoil lost in 19 years of cropping, equating to about 80 cents per ton of soil lost. He advocated vegetative cover, stubble retention, improved tillage, strip farming, and shelterbelts as controls.
