Fate of Floyd Collins Hangs on Uncertain Rescue Effort

City of Hope, Ky reports the fate of Floyd Collins remains uncertain as rescue engineers and volunteers dig toward the Sand Cave death trap. A rock fall and cave-ins have blocked deeper access, and failed sound tests left whether Collins is alive or dead unknown. Rescue teams press on hoping a tunnel or cavern leads to him within hours, despite complex, winding passages and narrow shafts.

Rescue shaft alignment twists around famed Sand Cave peril

Engineers advancing a rescue plan for Collins face a dingy honeycomb tunnel that may not align with the shaft. They hope to reach behind Collins through crevices in the cave to extricate him, but the exact position remains uncertain as early rescues struggled with similar hazards. Meanwhile, Camp Fire Girls stage a ceremonial fire lighting scene for Spruce Cone and Bunchberry at Lawrence with songs, dances, and solos led by Miss Helen Marcell.
