Birth Rate Declines in England Warns Expert
Manchester Feb 11 Associated Press Decline of the birth rate in England is seen as a national issue by Sir Robert Blair former chief education officer of the London County Council speaking at a Manchester educational conference He warned that within eight years there would be about 2 000 000 fewer workers in the country He noted a drop in births over recent years and said 100 000 children per year are being lost from each age group His estimates imply a shrinking future workforce despite wartime and postwar demographic changes The Ministry of Health notes the war years contribute to fewer children reaching school age and schools are budgeting for fewer pupils this year than 14 years ago
