Iowa Sex Offender Residency Rule Struck Down
A federal judge in Des Moines voided Iowa’s 2002 2000 foot sex offender residency law near schools and day care centers ruling it unconstitutionally infringes rights. The Iowa Civil Liberties Union challenged the ban as effectively banishing offenders from many communities. The ruling halts enforcement and upholds a summer temporary restraining order. Assistant Atty. Gen. Gordon Allen defended the policy as protecting children.
