Ruling stirs abortion debate in Mexico City
In Mexico City, where most abortions are illegal, a Supreme Court decision struck down penalties for abortion in rape and severe fetal deformity cases and reduced penalties for illegal abortion. Pro legalization supporters hail a constitutional right and judicial independence, while opponents warn of unsafe illegal procedures and rising abortions. The law’s impact varies by region and sociodemographic factors, with costly safe options abroad and dangerous, unregulated procedures for the poor.
