Noted Kansas Educator Dies After Long Illness
William E. Hodges, 52, Kansas educator, died Wednesday in Topeka after an extended illness. A KU alumnus with a 1933 bachelor’s and 1939 master’s, he taught and held admin roles in Kansas public schools until resigning as Belleville superintendent six years prior to joining the Kansas Teachers Placement Bureau. He belonged to several fraternities and community organizations. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, a son, and his mother. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Chapel, with burial in Wichita.

Lawrence police arrested 24 year old San Leandro California man Charles Cathcart on a felony warrant for bad checks. He was held on a vag rancy charge after failing to post a 3000 dollar bond. He was driving a stolen truck and accompanied by an 18 year old Bonner Springs girl who was released. Extradition procedures to California were to begin. Cathcart previously lived in Lawrence briefly last spring before moving to California.

Probation Release Given for Kenneth Bateman Former KU Senior
Kenneth Bateman a 21 year old former KU senior who was sentenced to six months in jail has been released on two year probation. Bateman pleaded guilty to assault and battery for an incident on January 6 in which he allegedly accosted a woman student and tried to coax her to accompany him. Sheriff Billy Hodson said Bateman has left Lawrence to work in another city.
