Kansas Legislature Splits Vote On Trade Bill And Probes

In Topeka today the Kansas Legislature defeated the "trade spark" bill 59 to 1043 after committee recommendation. The house adopted Schemerhorn's resolutions to probe rates and ordered investigations into various state matters while tabling several resolutions. A coal famine hearing, insurance rate probes, and a parole bill were among issues, with movement on a constitutional convention postponement and other routine notices.

Reading company president voices stance before anthracite cost strike panel

President Baer of the Reading company testified at the anthracite cost strike commission hearing in Philadelphia. Miners, led by John T Lenahaw of Wilkes-Barre, protested the principles and practices of the United Mine Workers in the session.

Excursion steamer Madiana ashore near Bermuda

The Quebec Steamship Company reported the excursion steamer Madiana, en route from New York with about 200 passengers, run aground off Bermuda. The vessel lies heavy with a list and may be a total loss. lifeboats were used to evacuate passengers, with all except Mr. and Mrs. John E. McKinney of St Louis identified as eastern travelers. Rescue efforts continue as authorities confirm the wreck and passenger retrieval.

Oklahoma City man charged with fraud over Dawes lands scam

An indictment accuses O F Powers formerly of Oklahoma City of obtaining money by false pretenses. He allegedly posed as agent for Creek and Seminole Indians to dispose of allotment lands after the Dawes commission allotment. About $500 in drafts were deemed worthless. Powers’ whereabouts are unknown.
