Topeka Feb 9 Secretary of Agriculture Charles F Brannan has been chosen as the headline speaker for the Kansas Democrats Washington Day dinner on Feb 25 announced by Max D Robinson president of the sponsoring Kansas Democratic Club. Brannan’s talk will climax two days of Kansas Democratic activities from Feb 22 with plans for 1500 guests and hopes to bring other prominent Democratic leaders to the event.
Topeka reports a brief cold snap followed by moderating temperatures and a outlook for mild days ahead. Forecaster Arnold notes little chance of rain this weekend with cloudiness possible tomorrow and lows near 30 to mid 40s, highs 50s to 60s in most areas. Phoenix February 9 a state investigation began to determine how trunk murderess Winnie Ruth Judd escaped from the Arizona hospital for the insane. The 48 year old killer, who admitted to killing two friends twenty years ago, returned voluntarily Thursday night after her fifth escape since Saturday. Governor Howard Pyle ordered inquiries to see if outside or inside forces aided the escape. O D Miller chairman of the board of control said the hospital’s own inquiry showed Judd fled with help from patients inside and friends outside.
British paratroopers jumped into a rainswept Malayan jungle clearing near the Thailand border in a daring airborne raid on a suspected Communist stronghold. Fifty seven men participated in the first paratroop action against the rebels in five years of fighting. The operation aimed to curb a noted Communist propaganda move claiming a Red state in Malaya. The first radio report said no opposition and all was well.
The Kansas Corporation Commission approved fare increases for Continental Bus System, Southern Greyhound Lines, and Southwestern Greyhound Lines operating in Kansas. The new graduated scale is 2.5 cents per mile for the first 50 miles, 24 cents per mile for the next 50 miles, 2.3 cents per mile between 100 and 200 miles, and 2.2 cents per mile beyond 200 miles, with a minimum fare of 25 cents unchanged. No opposition was noted to the applications.

Concrete foundations for basement and first floor are done. crews build east side forms on the second floor to begin pouring the third floor, aiming for early April completion despite a rough summer and favorable winter days aiding progress.

The ninth annual Kansas Women's Bowling Association state tournament will be held here over six weeks starting the Marett weekend, hosted by the Lawrence Women's Bowling Association.
