Fare hike decision put off by city cab audits
City commissioners delayed any cab fare increase until two Lawrence taxi firms submit a complete certified audit. They also asked the Citizens Advisory Council to study a proposed subsidy for elderly and needy riders within two to three months, with an interim report in 30 days. The proposed 10 cent per mile rise would lift a one mile ride to 1.30 dollars amid a 20 000 dollar annual loss claimed by the parent company. CEO Ward Thompson argued for a fast audit and said subsidies could aid seniors and the handicapped without hurting the Bus 62 program. The CAC study would also review the broader transit situation per a commissioned Omaha consultant. The commission will decide fares, not the CAC.

Snow storms sweep the region as crews battle drifted streets
Snow crews worked around the county amid a new winter storm watch. Four to six inches expected in the eastern part tonight with an 80 percent chance of snow, diminishing to flurries Thursday. Highs in the low 20s, lows in the mid to upper teens. Arnold Wiley said crews cleared main streets toward the hospital and schools while county roads remained slick in spots. One injury crash occurred near the East Lawrence exit as patches of ice on the Turnpike caused a skid into a guard rail.

Carter unveils 1.2 billion college aid plan for middle income
President Carter rolled out a 1.2 billion aid package aimed at middle income families facing college costs. It includes 250 dollar grants for some families and subsidized loans up to 47,000 gross income, part of a broader effort to surpass a potential tax credit push and expand federal aid. The plan, announced at the White House with HEW chief Califano, would lift grants and subsidize loans, targeting 3.1 million more students and boosting Work-Study and other programs. Kansas University Chancellor Archie Dykes commented on the need for aid and possible work-study increases.
