Sindlinger & Co reports 3.3 million more laid off and 11.6 percent unemployment last Wednesday, citing cold weather and data flaws. The firm, polling across 48 states, says government methods undercount job losses and that January unemployment rose vs December.
Lecompton city crews begin work to locate frozen water lines cutting water to several residences. City clerk Edna Flowers said the council authorized digging to thaw or replace lines and restore flow. Council also authorized a sewer system payment to the EPA and sought volunteers as severe weather watchers.
Gov. Robert Bennett appointed five new members to Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission. Leonard Thomas of Leawood named chairman and reappointed to a two year term. Also reappointed were Albert Campbell of Larned Calvin Strowig of Abilene Gary Sherrer of Topeka and Betty Marie Dunn of Topeka to two year terms.
Lawrence chamber of commerce reports $25000 raised and pledged toward buying land for expansion of Lawrence Municipal Airport. The drive aims for $35000 local share representing 10 percent of $350000 needed, with FAA funding the rest.

The 27th annual Conference on Aging at Kansas University will honor the Distinguished Older Kansan of the Year. Gov. Robert Bennett will speak at a 5 15 p.m. dinner in the Kansas Union. Sessions run today and Wednesday with experts from KU and beyond leading workshops and discussions.
The DeSoto School Board discussed revising the high school attendance policy to address period absence while noting elementary and junior high policy works well. The board also approved joining an Olathe special education cooperative with per student spending limits and extended contracts for all district principals and the superintendent. It authorized two hot lunch carts and added bus insurance, delaying non-certified hiring items to a Feb. 28 meeting.
A five foot boa constrictor escaped from a third floor room in Fraser Hall at Kansas University and was found lodged in a cabinet. Marc Quillen said the snake is in estivation and did not need food or water during the hiatus. The snake is back home unharmed. Gov. Bennett will decide on reappointing two Kansas Board of Regents members whose terms expired January 1.
First National Bank of Lawrence told about 100 stockholders at a breakfast meeting that 1976 saw record assets deposits and earnings. End of year resources stood at 54 319 533 65 up over 4 million from 1975.
