Signup Opens for 1973 Wheat and Feed Grain Programs
Signup for the 1973 wheat and feed grain programs is underway at the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation office and runs through March 16. Producers may file an intention to participate to qualify for wheat certificate payments and must maintain the farm conservation base. Option A requires a 25 percent set aside and productivity parity. Option B sets no set aside but caps 1973 feed grain acres to 1972 certified or measured levels. Substitution remains allowed to preserve allotments and eligibility for loans.

Some Might Up Soybean Production
Washington AP Agriculture Department specialist Buel Lanpher says farmers can raise soybean output this year by double dropping with early harvested grain. He notes profitability in southern areas and suggests adaption to Michigan and Wisconsin if harvest timing allows soybeans to mature before frost next fall. He proposes silage or hay from small grain, early harvest at 20 to 25 percent moisture, drying, and early maturing plant varieties.
