Black Sergeant Murrel Returns Home From Vietnam
Melvin Murrel known as the Black Sergeant of Tuy Loan is back in Syracuse still a wanted man by private and civic groups seeking talks on his Vietnam experiences. The Marine, 21, says he plans college, possibly a political science degree, and may return to civilian service with U S Aid. He led a combined action platoon near Da Nang and recalls a $6300 Viet Cong reward on his head as villagers backed him against the enemy. He stresses pacification efforts and defends his unit’s unity against prejudice and antiwar protests.
