Kansas As Grain and Growth Call Out by 1861 Era
Kansas prior to statehood saw a furor of growth and hardship as 1861 census tallied about 76000 residents, while falling crops drove 40000+ to abandon the state. The piece recalls early Douglas and Leavenworth days, judges like Josiah Miller, and county records, noting rail bonds, jail builds, and Quantrell raid impacts on archives.

Pension Bill Sees Large Number of Introductions
Washington Feb 8 The Philippine tariff bill opened in the senate with quiet proceedings. Senator Turner discussed Philippine questions as the bill was laid aside for the day. Senator Gallinger reported the pension appropriation bill with an amendment forbidding fees on securing passage of special pension bills. He noted about 5,000 special pensions introduced in this session, more than ever before in the House. An amendment granting pensionable status to Confederate veterans who later served in the Union army was defeated. The pension bill passed, with executive session adjourned to Monday. The House considered the legislative executive and judicial appropriation bill, with two major amendments adopted.
