A terrific boiler explosion at Lindermann and Sker colliery Humboldt demolished the building. Debris flew hundreds of feet and a boiler was hurled 200 feet. occupants escaped death by moments as a dwelling house was partly demolished. Loss will reach several thousand dollars.
In the forenoon session a lone discussion followed the motion to indefinitely postpone the house bill to create a state university law school graduation certificate to practice law. The motion failed, the bill remains on the calendar, and a separate measure to authorize courts to appoint stenographers was passed. Senate adjourned until Monday at four.
Mrs Elizabeth Vicary of Donegana Street, Montreal, recalls Mrs Dudley of Barnet nine miles from London. She was a slight well dressed woman with a dark complexion and intelligence, yet her eccentric manner drew attention. She watched shop windows and wandered the street in a distracted way.
Roswell B. Swift, son of contractor Wm H. Swift and newspaper man, visited the Evening Chronicle seeking W H Little. A scuffle followed after they argued about yesterday's article, Little sustaining a severe cheek gash. Swift was arrested. Little says a revolver misfired. The piece referenced Swift's father's marriage. Also report from Sydney: Hanlon defeats Clifford in a sculling race by six lengths.
New York dated February 7 reports President-elect Cleveland breakfasted with Col Lamont Major Grove and Gen Farnsworth. He held a daily reception with visitors including Governor Abbott of New Jersey ex Congressmen Rigga of Delaware and others. The Kansas delegation appeared and urged General Blair for secretary of the Interior. Other callers included Abram Hewitt Gen Blair of Kansas Senator Davis of West Virginia and J W Harper of New York.
In EuRKKa Cal Feb 7 riots injure David Kendall council member and a boy. Over 1,000 citizens attend a mass meeting with indignation at Chinese. A committee orders all Chinese to leave, march to a warehouse, awaiting steamship to San Francisco. A second mass meeting draws 2,000 attendees and a standing committee to bar Chinese entry in future.
New York February 7. A huge crowd of Irish nationalists and Fenian members gathered at the Tombs to witness the arraignment of Short for examination. Phelan’s arm was searched revealing a Colt five shooter. Judge Patterson denied a bail reduction and adjourned the case to Saturday.
Measrn. Frank Bacon and others on the executive committee of the United States association of states and territories presented a memorial for more funding to congress. President Arthur pledged prompt attention. A fire in the signal service annex damaged records charts and instruments, mainly on the second to fourth floors, with a loss not yet estimated.
A February dispatch from Abu Kruc on the Nile states Col Wilson’s party reports Khartoum fallen January 27. Arabs crowd river banks above the sixth cataract. Mahdi’s letter to surrender hints Gordon may be alive. London dispatches note a tense British position near Metemneh with news of Col Hascomer.
Reports from London describe Mahdi forces near Berber Metemneh and other areas gathering reinforcements. Dispatches detail clashes on the Nile banks, with Arabs pressing a British camp and plans of rescue attempts against island defenders. A police paper found in Burton’s belongings suggested a ground plan of Parliament, while a detective heads to the United States for Cunningham-related inquiries.
The senate approved amendments to Mexican pension bills including extended support for dependent parents and a single pension per person, with votes 37 to 12 and 30 to 17. The District of Columbia appropriation passed after amendments, and a bill to restore Theodore Tencyck to retired army status also cleared. Adjourned.
