Washington February 7 1942 Captain A D Kramer told Pearl Harbor investigators he never heard of any order for Navy Department personnel to destroy personal memoranda about events preceding Japan's December 7 1941 attack He said he was astonished to learn Captain I F Safford testified last week that such an order from Admiral Harold R Stark chief of operations was passed verbally through the Navy Department a few days after the attack
In London on February 7, French diplomat J Fouques Duparc urged postponing the UN site decision until next September citing New York City as an interim HQ risk. Nuertberg Feb 7 The British government revealed to the international military tribunal that Rudolf Hess traveled to Scotland in 1941 bearing proposals to depose the Churchill government and form a new cabinet that would grant the Nazis a free hand in Europe. Hess, a scarecrow figure in a secondhand suit, clutched the deck rail as a British officer pressed for his punishment among 22 Nazi defendants.
Topeka February 7 F C Beelman secretary of the Kansas state board said the first carload of human blood plasma sent for Kansas hospitals would likely be opened for use soon. Four Douglas county men were sent for induction into the armed forces at Ft Leavenworth. Washington Feb 7 The Case bill to curb labor strife passed the House by 257 to 155 after a lengthy roll call debate. The measure would create a federal mediation board to halt strikes for 30 days, widen court injunction use, allow civil suits for contract breaches, outlaw violent picketing, ban boycotts, and deny supervisor status to some workers while preserving key workers' rights amid partisan battles and opposition from organized labor allies.
Captain Chester A. Kunz announced that the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington authorized returning Templin Hall PT-5 to the University of Kansas for civilian use. The hall will be released once men and equipment move out, no later than Monday, with residents reassigned to the other three PT houses to ease housing shortages.
Fifty seven veterans representing 25 Indian tribes are enrolled under the G I Bill at Haskell Institute. Keith Kelley, principal, announced the new intake. Newton Kansas February 7 A hitch-hiker is sought in connection with the beating and choking of Mrs Ed Vickers of Hutchinson who was found injured beside a road south of Newton She was taken to a Hutchinson hospital in shock and described by deputy sheriff H W Goodman as severely injured The man sought had given Mrs Vickers a lift before the attack and the throat of Mrs Vickers was swollen preventing details February 10 quarantine noted.
Governor Drew Schoeppel announces a dog confinement quarantine across Wyandotte Johnson and Douglas counties to combat a rabies outbreak. Beginning February 10 all dogs must be confined for 29 days or destroyed by order of county authorities.
President Truman said he would call for meat rationing if needed to prevent 10 to 15 million people from starving. Dr. J M Mott director of the Douglas County health unit leads a clothing survey for inadequately clothed rural school children who have not sought relief. The plan avoids solicitation, seeks only validated needs, and notes offers of money and garments already received. The effort stresses not competing with existing relief agencies and targets families too proud or unable to apply.
Veterans flood University of Kansas as spring enrollment spikes. Examinations start tomorrow with psychological and aptitude tests, followed by medicals.
