Designer Is Award Winner Despite a Large Handicap
Japanese American designer Rose Hiraga, a quadriplegic, won an American Society of Interior Designers award for a modern fabric design. Born in Portland, Oregon, she creates upholstery and wallpaper while managing severe mobility limits, using a leather glove to hold a brush through an aperture and upper body control. She works on order for several firms, explains design fees and royalty possibilities, and notes market trends demand originality over traditional Oriental styles.
