Liu Yung-ming a 36 year old University of Missouri civil engineering graduate crossed into Red China with his wife and daughter after his father warned that Communists would kill him. Hong Kong authorities said he wished to settle in Hong Kong and could not be permitted to stay. Liu had come to the United States as a student before 1949 and earned a master’s degree in engineering at Missouri. He had a mental breakdown and was hospitalized in Farmington. The State Department warned of deportation but the British offered transit to Red China through Hong Kong. He was released after transit permission was granted.
