Lawrence district hosts social media nights for parents
The Lawrence school district will host social media nights for parents amid rising teen use of platforms beyond Facebook. The sessions aim to help families understand apps like snap chat and twitter and how to manage smartphone activity and online safety.
Teens juggle multiple social platforms at high rates
A Pew Research Study finds about 70 percent of teens use more than one platform such as Facebook Instagram Snapchat and Twitter. The district started parent rights this year to educate about online risks including cyber bullying and sexting. Three Internet threat incidents have been reported this school year. Last month a New Zealand blogger accused a Lawrence student of online harassment. Two upcoming parent meetings at West Middle School and Liberty Memorial Central will cover social media and online safety.

Kansas school consolidation plan draws criticism
Opponents told a Kansas House committee they fear loss of local control and potential closures under a bill requiring 98 of 105 counties to have a single unified district. Twenty-two counties already meet the rule, while Kansas’ seven most populous counties could have multiple districts if each exceeds 1,500 students. Republican Rep. John Bradford said residents are misinformed and that the bill would not close schools.
