Allied and Japanese forces clash across the Johore strait near Singapore as British anti aircraft and RAF fighters contend with Japanese bombers. U S pursuit planes reach the Indies and engage in Java while Port Moresby faces renewed four engine air raids.
University of Kansas Chancellor Deane W. Malott was guest speaker at the Douglas County Bar association meeting at Hotel Eldridge. He spoke on Kansas and its industrial prospects, history, and people, with Baldwin Mitchell directing the program.
Kansas City February 5 The Boy Scouts plan a 10 day scrap iron drive to supply steel for the six battleships. About 13 500 Scouts in 11 Missouri counties and 3 500 in 11 Kansas counties will participate next Thursday. Only scrap iron or steel is wanted and farms will be asked to contribute unused metal at current prices where available.
Washington February 5 The United States Army pursuit planes attacked a superior Japanese force in Java. They claimed one enemy bomber and one enemy fighter shot down while one American P 40 is missing. The report notes limited action on the Bat an Peninsula Philippines with no major engagements.
A Chinese communique reports Japanese setbacks around Waithow and Nanchang with 2,600 enemy casualties. In Washington the Senate approves a $26.5 billion naval supply bill and $500 million China aid, financing 25,063 more aircraft and large ship construction for the next six months.
