President Honver cabled greetings as Pascual Ortiz Rubio was sworn in as president of Mexico. The ceremony in Mexico City drew diplomats, military and political leaders, with Ortiz Rubio pledging five years of work for the people and stressing strong U.S.-Mexico relations.

Former heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey and film actress wife Hstelle Taylor departed Kansas City today for Los Angeles to inspect real estate holdings after arriving by train from New York. Dempsey had refereed a boxing match in St Joseph yesterday. Currency Crisis in Shanghai worsens as Mexican dollar hits a record low of 34.1 gold cents.
Weather outlook for Kansas shows fair tonight and Thursday with warmer conditions in the southeast and extreme east. Morning skies clear in Pittsburg and Coffeyville. Road conditions vary from muddy in Douglas County to good in Topeka Salina and Dodge City. Temperatures yesterday and today are listed with no exact figures.
In Austin Texas on February 3 the John W Brady murder trial jury reported itself in hopeless dis agreement. Judge J D Moore said he would not call the jurors down from their room until they asked. The jury sent word to Sheriff Coley White at 10 17 am that it was hopelessly hung.
Mexico City reports an assassination attempt on Pascual Ortiz Rubio as he left the national palace after his inauguration. A young man in black fired six shots at the president’s car. the assailant was captured inside the palace and refused to reveal his identity. The president’s car then proceeded toward his home.
Virginia Mote, one year old daughter of Hazel Mote, died in a Wichita crib under heavy blankets due to chicken pox and a severe cold. She was being cared for by Lillie Jordan while Hazel Mote, 19, recovering from a hospital birth at city jail after arrest of Rev R Bach. Bach's actions trigger inquiry by officials. the three year old child is with the father in Arkansas.
Mrs El Springer Tanager of the Sharon store and Miss Hazel Bowman along with Mrs Margaret Stewart, store employees, traveled to Kansas City to attend a fashion show by Kansas City retail merchants. The Lawrence party called the event a marked success noting red shades predominated in dresses and millinery with black close behind.
Kansas University basketball travels to Manhattan to renew Big Six play with the Kansas Aggies. radio KSAC will carry the 7 o clock start to air the entire contest.
London says Britain will favor abolishing submarines at the public plenary session of the naval disarmament conference next Tuesday. The United States also favors abolition, while Japan France and Italy regard subs as necessary defensive weapons. France may submit a humane submarine warfare treaty to replace the unratified Washington 1922 pact.
The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners announced deputy and tax assessors this morning. Real estate assessors will handle the four year real estate evaluation with new books to be prepared at county clerk O Bowman’s office. Assessing runs March 1 to May 1. City of Lawrence will employ sixteen deputy assessors split evenly between real estate and personal property. Names for townships and city lists include Clinton W H Benning Nudora C E Votan Charles Gabriel Grant Charles Woods Nanawa George T Richards etc.
Officials blocked the marriage of Francis H. Jensen, 29, a disabled World War veteran, and Victoria Vicroy, 65, of Leavenworth. Jensen, paralytic, appeared with Vicroy who claimed to be his aunt to register for the pension aid, prompting veterans bureau intervention and a hospital transfer for Jensen.
New York Times notes a judge may hear a son argue before the Supreme Court without participating in the decision. It cites Justice Day’s son and Justice Holmes muttering about the situation. Jim G Johnson, Leavenworth mayor, says he never sought state office and is pursuing the sheriff nomination for Leavenworth county.
Primary ballots nominating new church directors were canvassed at a board meeting. Seven will replace retiring members this year. Final ballots go out this week and are counted next Wednesday. Retiring directors include Chambers and Radcliffe. others hold over include Green, Hudson, and St. Clair.
The Missouri and Kansas Railroad company asked the Kansas public service commission for authority to impose store door delivery with no freight-rate increase. The plan targets less than car load shipments to Overland Park Lenexa and Olathe, citing truck competition and deliveries by Kansas City firms. The move follows rail interurbans losing passenger and freight revenue to buses and trucks as rivals expand.
London reports that the United States Great Britain and Japan expect a tentative agreement within days to reduce capital ships and battleships in their navies. Americans have submitted definite proposals to Britain and Japan. The plan would follow the 5 5 8 ratio from Washington but hinges on cruiser questions.

In Fairmont Minnesota a former Kaiser Wilhelm will soon chop wood at Doorn. An axe with an extra handle was sent to Holland by Lenny F Burton county registrar of deeds born in Germany. The gift followed a Kaiser Christmas card reply. Also a Chevrolet ad appears.
Oklahoma City Feb. 5 AP. A 10 year old African American girl testified that a china savings bank was broken open to collect protection money her mother could not pay. Federal court is narrowing defendants in a liquor conspiracy case in Pottawatomie county from 102 indicted to 26. Some defendants, including John Reed and Jud Frank Willingham, were dismissed. The child named a man called Mr Lombard who allegedly collected 35 protection from her mother in Earlsboro in 1927 as she ran a restaurant and liquor operation.
University of Kansas glee club announces a benefit program tomorrow at 8 pm in the University Auditorium. Prof Eugene Christy says the concert features four club number groups and two dances by Helen Burwell to raise about 900 dollars for the Missouri Valley glee club contest in Norman Oklahoma on February 14. Earnings from ticket sales at the door are hoped to meet expenses as the 34-member group prepares a finished program.
Bertin February 5 AP The Reichsrat approved laws to implement the Young plan for renovations with a 48 to 6 vote and 12 abstentions. The measures move to the Reichstag along with the German American debt agreement for direct payments to the United States and a German Polish pact viewed as easing relations. Also endorsed changes in Reichsbank and federal railway laws tied to the Young plan.
The House Judiciary sub committee favorably reported a bill by Representative Linthicum to officially recognize the unofficial air as the national anthem. The committee's response signals likely approval by the full Judiciary Committee as of February 5. Hanna- Atwater-Kedlo.
Eighteen year old Jess Milburn was acquitted by a Doublas county district court jury after forty minutes of deliberation in a burglary case tied to Simeon Rothberger. Rothberger testified under oath but refused to answer questions about Milburn’s whereabouts the night of the crime while Milburn faced charges of aiding in the Eudora Hardware burglary.
President and Mrs. Hoover visited William Howard Taft at his sick bed in a ten minute call. Taft’s doctors said he was slightly better after a quiet night, while a White House bulletin announced Hoover would visit Taft at 3 30 p m. Barc Taft would be glad to see him. Taft remains seriously ill after resigning as chief justice.
Kansas City February 5 AP Thirty six candidates for city offices will be listed on the ballots in the municipal primary March 4. The last hour for filing passed last night. There will be three candidates for mayor two contending for the Republican nomination. The Democratic party presenting a united front will have no contests. Candidates were picked in pre election caucuses of party leaders. The mayoralty candidates are George F. Kimball Raymond G. Barnett Republicans and Bryce B. Smith Democrat. Party names will not appear on the nonpartisan ballot but the pre season conferences of leaders have produced alignments that make the elections in fact a party stravel e part Favorably on Bill.
A large gray wolf about two feet high was spotted at the J. F. Lee farm home near Lawrence at noon today by Mrs. Lee and Grace Lee. The dog refused to pursue, and the wolf eventually loped away. The farm lies five miles southwest of Lawrence, one mile south of U S Highway 40.
Fire of unknown origin started on the first floor severely damaging the kitchen, clothes closet, and dining room of Melvin Goff at 2244 New Hampshire Street. Firefighters forced entry, tore down walls, and carried furniture to the lawn as neighbors aided. No one was home. other small blazes on 1011 Tennessee Street and minor smoke injuries reported among responders.
Kansas City AP reports Sarahead known as Kate King, once wed to Civil War guerrilla leader William Clarke Quantrill, has died at 82 after years in a Jackson County home. Her life linked to raid fame, marriage, escapes, and enduring myth of Quantrill. Funeral plans pending after relatives located.
Chicago records two more killings as part of a six day spree with five gang slayings and more wounded. Victims include Phillip Marchese a known gunman, and Joseph Buckere, a grocer adding to a citywide wave of violence. The House adopted the Wood resolution funding a gold star mothers pilgrimage to European battlefields and cemeteries.
Two Dickinson theater youths narrowly escaped death from gas fumes in the upstairs theater office. Janitor W. Howard found them unconscious beside a gas grate and dragged them to safety as fire and police responders, with Dr. Wexler and officers, worked about half an hour to revive Hevener and stabilize Smith. Hevener remained ill but improved at home. Smith recovered enough to walk and talk later.
The Federal Parole Board recommends parole for Arctic explorer Frederick A. Cook, serving 15 years at Leavenworth for mail fraud related to petroleum stock sales. If Attorney General Mitchell approves, the recommendation goes to President Hoover for final action. Cook’s sentence began in 1928 and could lead to parole on March 1. The case followed Hoover’s denial of executive clemency in March of the previous year.
