City completes piling project to shield water plant
The city water department finished driving 90 creosoted pine piling north of the water plant this noon to protect the low service pumping system from the river. A 30 pile section runs from the northeast corner of the settling basin to the timber by the river, 33 piles and 25 piles were added on the south side of Brewery Brook, and two piles at the river edge form a boat dock. Piles are 25 feet long and driven by a machine rented from Caesar Construction of Topeka. Douglas County supplied the pile driver. All workers besides the operator were water department employees.
