American and German gunners clashed in a first artillery duel with American seventy fives driving the bombardment. Dugouts and trenches were damaged while German fortifications lay ruined. American trenches sustained light losses as officers reported no casualties. Washington later noted American troops occupying part of the active front.
London, Feb. 4. Strikes in Germany seem to be ending with reports of resumed work today except for a new movement at Jena. Krupp workers see only 400 of 110,000 on strike, fined or dismissed. A court martial building is guarded as Heinrich Schultze is sentenced to six months for urging strikes.
Washington reports a conference of state administrators to assess coal savings from the five heatless Mondays and the five day industrial closing order. A final decision is expected tomorrow after talks between Garfield and McAdoo.
Secretary Baker warns against letting German internal unrest slow war prep and reports American troops now occupy part of the front. He asserts allies hold numerical superiority in men and guns on the western front despite German reinforcements from the east, citing raids and patrol activity along No Man's Land.
Randal Harvey, KU sophomore and member of Company M, the university national guard unit, is reported to have spinal meningitis. He is from Topeka and enlisted during the Mexican border troubles, re-enlisting before the unit was called to Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
In Fraser Chapel Lieutenant Perigord of the French army praises American unity and support for France. He cites American efforts before entry, the French sacrifice at Verdun and Ypres, and the need for a united home front as the war rages. Senator Hitchcock rebuts Secretary Baker on shipping and war planning, urging centralized planning and a war cabinet amid shipping shortages and bureaucratic delays.
Enrolment began this morning in Robins on Gym with long lines and slow number drawing. A drop from last semester is expected. Many courses aiding students entering service or war work are in demand. Actual classes start tomorrow.

Mrs. Edward MacDowell visits Fraser Hall, stays with Prof. and Mrs. C. S. Skilton, and will attend the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra concert where Skilton conducts Indian dances.
The Douglas County Red Cross finances a drive for steady local support. Twelve monthly checks are mailed predated to the first of each month, with funds to be collected by county banks. Rising costs, including yarn over $1,200 and gauze and fabric bills over $900, drive the effort as workers increase and space is rearranged at Watkins Bank.
Major W. C. Hoad, born and educated in Douglas County Kansas, leaves Kansas to serve on Surgeon General Gorgas staff. He will train at Camp Oglethorpe Georgia then work in Washington DC handling the sanitary corps for national army camps and aviation camps.
The government commission blamed Pilot Mackay of Halifax and Captain Lamodec of the French ship for the Mont Blanc and Imo collision that destroyed a large part of Halifax on December 6. The finding was announced today.
Van Neste realizes a profit by selling his Kanwaka farm of 176 acres to Arthur and Robert Ulrich and reinvesting in the C. B. Young 130 acre homestead in Grant township near the Leavenworth county line. W. E. Davis visits from Camp Doniphon to spend a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Davis.
Local draft officials report a state order halting certain physical examinations and delaying classifying registrants. About 1,200 men, roughly 60 percent of Douglas County’s 1,960 registrants, may be affected as reclassification and leniency reviews are considered by the district board. Class 1 names and counties of residence are listed, with many from Lawrence and surrounding towns.
The Ministerial Alliance met at the Y M C A and agreed to cooperate with the state fuel administrator's request to close churches on Sunday night. Rev Ben W Sanderson chaired the committee which will propose city work plans, with announcements expected after its next meeting.
